| Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant March 8th 4:30pm - 7:30pm
Greetings:
In 1985, Rand Yazzolino founded Estate Wines with a clear mission: to promote excellent, small production wines from around the world. These were wines that reflected a sense of place, passion, and history that simply needed exposure to tell their story. His approach was to educate top restaurateurs and retailers to this new wave of artisan producers. Twenty years later, Rand has fulfilled his dream, and today Estate Wines proudly distributes wines from around 110 small producers that focus on estate-grown fruit and hand made wines. Here in San Francisco, where cutting edge restaurant wine lists and adventurous retailers help to educate the insatiable thirst of a sophisticated public, many of us rely on Rand. In his own gracious and skilled way, Rand is one of the behind the scenes professionals who keeps those of us in the wine business at the top of our game.
Along the way, Rand has become one of California’s leading experts on Italian wines. Through a long relationship with Marc de Grazia, an exporter who is considered by many to be the premier source of outstanding Italian wines, Rand and his staff are responsible for importing a spectacular portfolio of both traditional and modern wines from this diverse country.
As part of our continuing series of wine flights in our Bar, we knew we had to highlight Piemonte, one of the most significant wine regions in the world, and a particular specialty of Rand Yazzolino. He has selected five of the best from his portfolio, and he’ll be here to share insight about not just the wine, but also the region, culture, and people that make it so special.
And the flight for the night will be:
1998 Barolo, “La Morro” Elio Altare, Piemonte, Italy Retail: $83 1998 Barolo, “La Villa” Seghesio, Piemonte, Italy Retail: $55 2001 Barbaresco, Cotta”Sottimano, Piemonte, Italy Retail: $65 2001 Barolo, “Le Viole” Marengo, Piemonte, Italy Retail: $56 2001 Barolo, “Carobric” Scavino, Piemonte, Italy Retail: $85

2002/2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Tasting! The Wine Club Santa Clara Presents: When: Sat March 11@1-5pm Cost: $30 2002 Bennett Lane 2002 Ladera Lone Canyon 2002 Constant Diamond Mountain 2002 Dominus Napanook~92pts Parker 2002 Jordan 2002 Pine Ridge Stag's Leap District 2002 Mondavi Oakville 2002 Anderson Reserve Cabernet~94pts parker 2002 Whitehall Lane Reserve 2002 Dominus~95pts Parker 2003 Shafer 2003 Caymus Special Select~94pts Parker 2003 Ladera Howell Mountain
My quick thoughts: Jordan was predictably poor. 82 pts Napanook - nice fruit, little heavy on the oak. 90pts Bennett Lane - Very tasty, round, ripe flavors, slightly astringent finish Mondavi - Embarassing. 80 pts max Anderson Conn Valley - Trying to be a bordeaux. Predictable aromas of tobacco & earth with the fruit, rather thin. Very long finish. Might be very good with some age. Ladera - very nice reprieve after the conn valley. Velvety and plush. 88 pts Constant - Very impressive, only one I wrote "wow" next to. Complete package, with layers of depth. 95 pts. Pine ridge - nice, but missing something for my palate. Finish was slightly metallic 91 pts Whitehall - extraordinarily average. Nothing remarkable here. 86 pts. Dominus - heavy handed oak treatment hides the fruit underneath. 91 pts Shafer - Oh yeah, this is what its about. CLear bright berry fruits, laser like focus, lots of structure. 94 pts Caymus SS - Being a HUGE fan of Caymus in years past I was hoping for something here. Unfortunately, the bottle I tasted was just opened. This wine was... boring. Simplicity of kool aid. What the heck?
Purchased some Shafer & Constant. | | | |

| | I avoided the tasting, nothing I'd buy anyway, but did pick up some Perrot-Minot NSG, Chave Crozes Hermitage, Clos Apalta, and Don Melchor. | | Paul Romero - Owner/Winemaker Stefania Wine www.stefaniawine.com | |

| | I thought about it, but I'm just not interested in the rest of the wines. It basically translates to a $40 taste of Yquem... which is not at all worth it to me. | | | |
