The Auction Napa Valley is set for June 1st through 4th.

The Cakebread Family is this year's hosts.

This is THE event in the Napa Valley.

Something new this year... you will be able to bid from home.

Last year participants could bid on line from kiosks set up at the event. This year it all goes "public" on the net. The bidding will go "live" on May 19th from wherever you are in the world. On June 2nd the bidding will be in "real time" with bidders at the on-site event with bidders from around the globe (this includes you) for the one-of-a-kind auction lots.

I'll post the web address as soon as I have it. In the past many of the lots have been beyond belief. Wines, dinners, wine trips... they are fantastic so start saving your money right now.

Are you going to bite the bullet and go this year David? If you do I'll make sure you get a glass (or two) of 2004 Madeline's Cuvee.

Madeline's Cuvee

Fantastic. I didn't know about that. Is this something that will be made available to people on the mailing list? Is the label going to be in Spanish?

I hope we can go. Isn't it $7500 a couple. That isn't exactly cheap. If my tax planner is anywhere near right for April and I don't owe too much more we'll go.

LOL. It was $7,500 last year. I don't know what it will be this year. Still for someone as passionate about wine as you I'd say pay the cost and go. The Auction is one of the highlights of the year imo.

We decided to do a cuvee for a child of the family in the year of his/her birth. Madeline was born in 2004 so the first cuvee is going to be for her. There won't be a 2005 cuvee because no child was born last year. There will of course be a 2006 Baby X cuvee made.

Basically the concept is that Heidi selects the best barrel of wine for the cuvee (a bit of a misnomer). It will not be available except at certain events such as the Auction or Premier.

Tomorrow's Premier lot is 100% Cabernet from the three acre block designed and planted by Abreu. I have not tasted it yet but we have a case of shiners sitting in our cellar right now that will be tasted at Premier (they were recently bottled so I'm hoping they are not too shocky). Five cases will be available at Premier. It has not been decided yet but this offering may end up being part of Madeline's Cuvee.

The rest will be laid down for Madeline although I suspect there will be a little shrinkage along the way.

Albinoed? LOL.

Best wishes on baby 2006. It will be fun to see you both in SB.

He said shrinkage! hahahaha!

Great idea though, Jones. Congrats on the upcoming Baby X, too, BTW.

Will the label be a picture of Madeline or the normal label with "Cuvee Madeline" added?

Don't know yet. The Premier lot like most other premier lots will be designated as such on the label.

I edited the post above to correct some errors.

The cat's out of the bag (so to speak).

Congratulations to the three of you; a new baby sister.

I actually hadn't even told Tricia. What a relief!

Thanks Everyone.

The Premier lot despite being bottled 10 days earlier was tasting pretty good imo. Capitol Cellars of Roseville, California bought the five case lot.

Is Madeline's cuvee going to be available to the mail list customers?

We're still kicking the idea around a bit but the current plan is that the wine will only be shared with family and friends. It won't be sold. The Premier lot presumably will be sold to the public by Capitol Cellars although I don't know what they will charge for it (they paid 18k or $300 a bottle for the lot iirc).

18K

Good price for a great cause.

Congratulations!

I understand several lots (even the 10 case lots) went for over 30K. I had a long chat with Kevin Vogt, MS at Delmonico Tuesday night. He had just returned with some pretty good bounty.

It sure looks like a good showing to me.

My new buddy Kevin wanted the Gemstone so bad he could taste it. He ended up with something else but I can't remember what.

Five cases of Rombauer for $85,000.00. That's over $1400 a bottle
What was it? I don't believe the number. You're joking, right?

Nope, he's not joking - that was the price. Having tried the wine that was being auctioned I can assure that the price was about $84,000 too high.

What was it? Please don't tell me it was a Chard or Zin. Who bought it? I wanna go look at some when it gets delivered.

I can just see the wine list now. With a minimum markup...

200X Rombauer Chardonnay, cuvee Sucker... $2500.00

It was a cabernet and it was purchased by someone from the Petroleum Club - a private club - in Oklahoma City. I can only assume that they were bidding for it on behalf of one of their members, otherwise you're right - it's a $50 bottle of Napa cab on the wine list for $1,500.
