VOSNE-ROMANÉE: 2001 vs. 2002
FRIDAY 9/9 & SATURDAY 9/10
In the excitement over the beautiful 2002s, the 2001s from the Côte de Nuits seem to have been forgotten. The 2001s are exemplary Red Burgundies, with tremendous balance, terroir expression, and structure for ageing. Time will tell which is the better vintage. Here is an early snapshot of the two vintages, featuring wines from Vosne-Romanée. Judge which you like better today, and which you think will come out best in the long run.

1. 2001 Vosne-Romanée “Les Orveaux” (Mongeard-Mugneret) $55.00/btl $8.00/taste
2. 2002 Vosne-Romanée “Les Orveaux” (Mongeard-Mugneret) $60.00/btl $8.75/taste
3. 2002 Vosne-Romanée “Les Champs Perdrix” (Bruno Clair) $62.00/btl $9.00/taste

6. 2001 Vosne-Romanée “Les Suchots” (Vincent Girardin) $68.00/btl $9.75/taste

ITALY'S CAMPANIA
THURSDAY 9/22
Campania is the southern Italian province of Naples, Pompeii and Vesuvius. Just 15 years ago it was a viticultural backwater, and its wines pure mediocrity, at best. Today it is one of the most exciting wine districts in Italy, leaving its southern neighbors Sicily and Apulia in the dust. This is largely the result of the trailblazing work of two wineries, Feudi di San Gregorio and Mastroberardino. This tasting of three whites and four reds showcases the state of the art in Campania.

1. 2004 Sannio “Falanghina” (Feudi di San Gregorio) $14.00/btl $2.50/taste
2. 2003 Sannio “Falanghina” (Mastroberardino) $17.50/btl $3.00/taste
3. 2003 Greco di Tufo (Feudi di San Gregorio) $25.00/btl $4.50/taste
4. 2003 Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Rosso (Mastroberardino) $20.00/btl $3.50/taste
5. 2000 Irpinia “Naturalis Historia” (Mastroberardino) $65.00/btl $9.25/taste
6. 1999 Taurasi “Piano di Montevergine” (Feudi di San Gregorio) $68.00/btl $9.75/taste
7. 2001 Irpinia Aglianico “Serpico” (Feudi di San Gregorio) $80.00/btl $11.50/taste

Short Series (1-4) $12.00
Full Series (1-7) $39.00

WHITE BURGUNDIES: 2001 vs. 2002 FRIDAY 9/23 & SATURDAY 9/24
There is a consensus that 2002 is a superb vintage for white Burgundies. They are wonderfully fresh and vibrant now, and have excellent prospects for ageing. But don’t overlook the 2001s. They are lush, generous, open wines, lower in acidity and seemingly already in their prime. Let’s see which vintage is tasting better now.

1. 2002 Meursault “Les Bouchères” (Jean-Marc Boillot) $58.00/btl $8.50/taste
2. 2001 Puligny-Montrachet “Les Perrières” (Vincent Girardin) $58.00/btl $8.50/taste
3. 2002 Chassagne-Montrachet “En Remilly” (Colin-Deléger) $60.00/btl $8.75/taste
4. 2001 Puligny-Montrachet “Les Referts” (Jean-Marc Boillot) $65.00/btl $9.50/taste
5. 2001 Puligny-Montrachet “La Truffière” (Bernard Morey) $78.00/btl $11.25/taste
6. 2002 Chassagne-Montrachet “Morgeot” (Jean-Marc Pillot) $80.00/btl $11.50/taste
7. 2001 Corton-Charlemagne (Vincent Girardin) $88.00/btl $12.50/taste

Short Series (1-4) $32.00
Full Series (1-8) $76.00

ITALIAN FESTIVAL: 2001 Barolo

Friday, September 30th 6:00 to 9:00, $30.00/ person + tax
Saturday, October 1st 4:00 to 8:00, $30.00/ person + tax
There will be Italy in the air at Santana Row as the center hosts the San Jose Italian Festival. We’re going to do our part and taste you through an astonishing menu of 2001 Barolo.

The Gambero Rosso, Italy’s most respected wine publication, gave Piemonte’s 2001 vintage more respectable consideration, a perfect five out five stars rating, than the highly touted 2000 vintage in which Wine Spectator rated a perfect 100. While the 2000 Piemonte wines were freakishly good, they are entirely different than 2001’s. After having tasted nearly every 2000 Barolo and Barbaresco of note and having traveled to Piemonte to taste the 2001’s, I can tell you a reason why European wine publications, such as “Gambero Rosso” and “Decanter Magazine”, favor the 2001 vintage over the 2000; it is because they are CLASSICALLY STRUCTURED, BALANCED AND IMMENSELY COMPLEX. Don’t miss this one.

2001 Albino Rocca Barbaresco “Bric Ronchi” $65.99
2001 Albino Rocca Barbaresco “Vigneto Loreto” $62.99
2001 Paolo Scavino Barolo “Normale” 93 points Wine Spectator $49.99
2001 Marengo Barolo “Brunate” $58.99
2001 Revello Barolo “Giachini” 96 points Wine Spectator $62.99
2001 Azelia Barolo “Bricco Fiasco” 93 points Wine Spectator $73.99
2001 Azelia Barolo “San Rocco” 95 points Wine Spectator $75.99
2001 Clerico Barolo “ Ginestra” 96 points Wine Spectator $82.99
2001 Scavino Barolo “Bric del Fiasc” 96 Points Wine Spectator $104.99

Beltramo’s Wednesday Evening Tastings

October 12 – Shafer Hillside Vertical $75

We are pleased to be joined by Doug Shafer as we taste the vintages from 1995 to the just-released 2001. Shafer’s Hillside Select is consistently one of Napa’s best and most sought-after Cabernets.

October 19 – Peter Weygandt and the wines of Dugat-Py $150

Importer Peter Weygandt will lead us through a tasting of the 2002s from this acclaimed producer. The quantity produced is measured in terms of a very few barrels. This is a rare opportunity to taste and purchase the work of an artisan in the vineyards and the winery.

October 26 – 2002 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti $375

Our annual tasting of all the wines from the Domaine, from Vosne Romanee to Romanee Conti and Montrachet.

November 2 –Cabernet Walkaround $150

Join us for a “trade style” tasting of some of Napa’s best small producers, new and old. We’ll feature Araujo, Bryant, Chessler, Culler, Dalla Valle, Insignia, Opus One, Revana, Spottswoode, Staglin, Switchback Ridge, Vineyard 29, and Wolf Family.

November 9 – Pinot Fair $100

This will be another mobile feast for the senses, with stops in the Willamette Valley, Sonoma, Marin, the Santa Lucia Highlands and a Sideways detour. Explore the quality and diversity of American Pinot Noir.

November 16 – Champagne Gala $75

It’s time for our annual celebration of bubbly, in preparation for the holidays. As always, this tasting will feature the famous names and hidden gems.

We require reservations for all tastings. They must be made in person or by phone with credit card. Sorry, we will not accept reservations without pre-payment. No credits, refunds or transfers permitted. To help all of our customers enjoy the bouquet of the wines, please no perfume, cologne, aftershave or food. Thanks!

Hmm, I might have to bite on the Shafer Hillside tasting and the DRC tasting. The Dugat-Py tasting also sounds interesting.

I was thinking the same thing until I saw that it's on Wednesday nights. It's a big commitment to drive from the East Bay to the Peninsula during rush hour to make it to the tasting...

Yes, that is a problem, but I work in SF so it isn't quite as bad. Want to BART over and then we could drive down together?

Btw, do you need to sign up in advance for these Beltramos tastings?
