The Jug Shop Wine Bar
Late breaking tasting!
Tim Adams at The Jug Shop
Saturday, June 4th, 2.00 to 4.30p

"Very few wineries in Australia, large or small, offer the genuine quality, year after year, at such an affordable price as Tim Adams. More admirably still, it's Tim's ambition to maintain his present production, keep his prices where they are, and to improve quality as his new vineyards come on stream.

Stylistically, his whites are fragrant, taut and trim, his reds deeply aromatic and concentrated, but restrained and linear." Jeremy Oliver, Australian Wine Annual 2004
Our good friend Tim Adams from Australia's Clare Valley rang up today asking if we had some space for him to pour at our wine bar on Saturday.  He must have been half-mad to think we might turn down the opportunity!  Come meet Tim and taste the latest releases, including his Cabernet and Shiraz, an absolutely top-notch 2004 Riesling, the world-renowned Fergus Grenache and Aberfeldy Shiraz, along with some cellar selections from our stocks.  Due to Tim's late-afternoon flight, this tasting will be held between 2.00 and 4.30 pm rather than at our usual Saturday time.

This Wednesday, we are welcoming two new wineries to the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant tasting series. We’ve been watching Realm and Relic, a couple of exciting new producers, and we’re thrilled to have them present the second vintage of their limited release wines to you from 4:30 to 7:30 in our Wine Bar.

When winemaker Mike Hirby and Proprietors Wendell Laidley and Juan Mercado talk about their projects, the one thing that sticks out is how proud they are of their vineyard sources. In fact, they each site the fact that they were able to buy fruit from some of the most renowned vineyards as the reason that they began the labels, not the other way around. Perhaps that takes some explaining…usually, a producer gets together some people and hatches the idea of starting a label first, and then they go about finding fruit sources that are suitable for their project.

The first vintages of these wines were real crowd-pleasers, and we are looking forward to tasting the next vintages with you…some of these haven’t even been released yet, so in true Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant style, this is a real sneak preview!

We'll be pouring the following wines:

2003 Relic Pinot Noir, Alder Springs Vineyard, Mendocino
retail: $38
2003 Relic Syrah, Alder Springs Vineyard, Mendocino
retail: $57
2003 Realm Cellars, The Bard, Napa Valley
retail: $77
2003 Realm Cellars, Beckstoffer, Napa Valley
retail: $87
2003 Realm Cellars, The Tempest, Napa Valley
retail: $67

The cost of the flight will be $45…there me some bottles available for retail sale if supply allows.

Next Up: Wednesday, June 22, from 4:30-7:30pm: Laurie & Tom Clark: A Clark-Claudon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Vertical

Debbie, Peter, Bo, John and the entire FPWM team

Lavanda, Palo Alto - Thursday June 16th tasting with Josh Jensen of Calera Winery

Josh Jensen's winemaker mentors in Burgundy were adamant that Pinot Noir and Chardonnay must be grown in limestone-rich soils, as present in the Côtes d’Or, to make great wines. Upon his return from France in 1971 he spent two years searching throughout California to find limestone before finally purchasing, in early 1974, a high-elevation parcel with a limestone deposit of several million tons. Located 90 miles south of San Francisco and about 25 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, Calera Winery lies near Mt. Harlan in San Benito County. Its elevation is 2,200 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest and coldest vineyard properties in California.

In 1975, Josh planted his first 24 acres of Pinot Noir in three separate parcels. In the Burgundian tradition, he named each parcel individually to emphasize the fact that each would produce a distinct wine. The original plantings are the Selleck Vineyard (5 acres), Reed Vineyard (5 acres), and Jensen Vineyard (14 acres). These vineyards produced their initial tiny crop in 1978.

This Thursday, Lavanda guests will be tasting a sampling of Josh's four vineyards-- Jensen, Reed, Selleck and Mills--all from the 2000 vintage, as well as a very rare flight of '84 and '85 Jensen and '86 Reed.

Bruce will also have on-hand four hard copies of the classic "Heartbreak Grape" which chronicles Josh's search for the perfect Pinot Noir. The book, which is now out of print, will be signed by Josh.

Pricing
2000 flight -- $20
80's flight -- $20
Signed copy of "Heartbreak Grape" -- $35

The tasting is from 6 to 8 PM.

K&L Wine Merchants in San Francisco invited us to pour our 2003 Sonoma County Syrah at one of their informal Thursday evening tastings. I will be there on June 30th from 4:30-6:30 pm pouring. Please stop by if you are in the neighborhood. The address is 638 4th St. close to SBC Park.

I believe they charge $1 to taste only because they are required by California ABC laws to charge something. I plan on also bringing a bottle of the 2003 Unti Syrah even though they do not carry it as of yet.

If anyone from Vinocellar does stop by, please let me know. I always like to meet people from the boards
