On May 25th, Peay Vineyards will pour the following wines at the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant's Wednesday winemaker flight.

In addition to me, Nick Peay, winegrower, and Vanessa Wong, winemaker, will come in off the mountain to answer any questions you may have.

The event starts at 5 pm and runs to 7:30 pm or until the wine runs out. There will be an opportuinity to buy a few of the wines at this tasting.

We will pour the following:

2003 Peay Vineyards Viognier, Sonoma Coast Estate (Sold Out)

2003 Peay Vineyards Roussanne/Marsanne, Sonoma Coast Estate (5 cases in inventory)

2003 Peay Vineyards Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast Estate (come early to try this, we are sold out and found a few bottles to pour from the library) SOLD OUT

2003 Peay Vineyards Pinot noir, Sonoma Coast Estate (10 cases in inventory)

2002 Peay Vineyards Syrah, Sonoma Coast Estate (10 cases in inventory)

I suggest you come early as these tastings are very popular and you want to get there in time to get the best stemware.

See you then.

A Wednesday night.

Difficult for us to go that far on a weeknight but will try.

This should be a piece of cake to make it too. Walking distance from work and I get off at 3:30 p.m. so I can go over and enjoy some oysters at Hog Island or Caviar at Tsar Nicoluai.

This was a very nice event. Got to taste all five Peay wines (all from the 2003 vintage, except the syrah, which was 2002) with Bob Summers, Skwid, Eric Lundblad, Que Syrah, Paul Homchick, and Christine Huang.

IMO the whites were drinking well, although both the roussane/marsanne and chardonnay probably will benefit from a year or more in bottle. Had the 2002 chard two weeks ago, and the extra year really helped it vis a vis the 2003. Peay's chard production is going to increase more than tenfold beginning with the 2004 vintage as they are keeping more grapes for themselves. Good news, as both the 2002 and 2003 wines are really impressive (closer to white burgundy than typical California).

The syrah I think is a few years away from prime drinking, although Vanessa Wong says that she just gives it a half hour decant before serving at home. The 2003 pinot definitely has potential and seemed like a bigger wine than their 2002. I also think it will benefit from a year in bottle. These are all excellent wines -- you can't make a mistake buying Peay.

The Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant, which hosted the tasting, also allows $6 corkage for bottles purchased on premises. Of course, we snagged a few bottles and opened them:

2004 Marilyn Remark Marsanne
2003 Michaud Marsanne
2003 Dagueneau Silex
2003 McPrice Myers Larner Syrah
1999 Jasmin Cote Rotie
2002 Roumier Chambolle Musigny

My favorite of the "second flight" was the Michaud, which was probably the best California marsanne I've had (albeit that's a short list). All of the wines were nice, although I'm not sure the Dagueneau is worth the tariff and the Roumier seemed a little tight (not surprising). I heard great things about McPrice Myers following Hospice du Rhone, and was not disappointed. A new producer worth checking out.

Thanks to the crew for turning my half-hour tasting break into two hours.

Ksyrah is the better spelling, Que Syrah is a lovely vineyard owned by Al Rago.

I also enjoyed the event and meeting up with y'all. My favorites were the Roussanne-Marsanne and the Syrah, agree that the latter wine needs several years. It was great to meet Andy, Nick and Vanessa. Nice folks who are making some very nice wines.

The Roumier opened up quite a bit by the time we got to the restaurant (actually, I guess that was the first of the two restaurants for some of us).

-Al

P.S. Hope the brief turned out well.

I'm sure that was an interesting legal brief.
