Sometimes I feel like the press secretary for Morrells.

Today they will be opening a mag (or double mag) of the 1984 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (95RP).

Last I heard, they will be charging $26 for a 2 ounce pour and $65 for a glass.

Not sure exactly what time it starts, but they should have the bottle available most of the afternoon....

I had a bottle of this about nine months ago. It is drinking beautifully. I paid $100 for the bottle so the price they are charging seems elevated to say the least.

You got a heck of a deal on that bottle JW1. The cheapest price on wine-searcher.com is $170. At $26/2 ounces that is about $312/bottle they will be getting which isn't outragous if one considers the going rate to be about $150+. That's double retail which isn't as bad as alot of wine pricing at restaurants/bars.

This has been changed. Just stopped in for a sec and found out it's now the 1984 Chateau Montelena mag that they opened. Something about their Dunn HM mag being signed and they didn't want to open it...

$10 an ounce or $50 a glass.

Anyone know ratings? Impressions?

Here is what WS has on the 1984 vintage it:

Deep, dark, concentrated and ripe, showing massive cherry, chocolate and spice flavors. Chewy texture, yet it's elegant and harmonious. Should be beautiful at five to 10 years' age.
94 pts (tasted in 1988)

The ripest vintage since 1978, this is rich and opulent, with juicy black cherry and currant flavors, turning firm and tannic.--Chateau Montelena vertical. Drink now through 2008. (JL)
93 pts (tasted in 1999)

EDITED TO CLARIFY YEAR TASTED. BOTH NOTES FOR THE 1984 VINTAGE.

Thank you both very much. I've never had a wine older than 12 years old, so this would be a treat.

Not sure if I'll make it over there but if I do, I'm in for a few ounces! (maybe 52!)

Eno-File has a quick note on the 84 Montelena. The 84 Montelena has always been one of my favorite Montelenas from the eighties. Price still seems quite high. I believe the 84 I recently had was purchased off a wine list for $120 a bottle.

Wine Advocate #94 (Aug 1994) Robert Parker 92 points Drink 1994-2010 Last Tasted 10/93

Chateau Montelena's wines possess gorgeous potential when young, and are even better when revisited later. The 1984 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits the forward, jammy, cassis, and other black fruit character of the vintage, marvelously rich, full-bodied, concentrated flavors, high extract, gobs of glycerin, and moderate tannin in the finish. Its virtues - purity, richness, and opulence - along with a firm underpinning of tannin, should serve it well for another 10-15 years.

Yeah - you'll never get a good deal at Morrell's.

Thanks for the input.
