Beltramos, Redwood City

Wine Club San Francisco
Saturday 11th
Veuve Clicquot & Krug (with Clicquot’s Western Regional Manager)

Notes for the uninitiated:
Beltramos will charge for individual pours or for the whole flight.
Wine Club charges for the whole flight. Sometimes there are additional "mystery" wines which have been brought by other patrons.
They also have a tasting bar that's open daily where various wines (often including the dregs of the recent tasting) are available for 10% of bottle price per pour.
Weimax in Burlingame also has a tasting room that's open daily.
There may be other retailers who do tastings that I don't know about - apologies to them.

Down in the same area as some of your other listings, Vin, Vino, Wine has tastings Tuesdays through Fridays at their shop on California Avenue in Palo Alto. Wines are available by the taste, or by the series. SeeVVW Tastingbar link

Here's the line-up for TWC in San Jose on Friday and Sunday.
I'd be interested to know what SF plans to pour for $20.

Veuve Clicquot
NV Brut
98 Rose Reserve
95 Grand Dame Rose 91pts Wine Spectator
96 Grand Dame 91pts Wine Spectator, 95pts Tanzer
Demi-Sec

Krug
NV Grand Cuvee 95pts Wine Spectator, 93pts Tanzer, 92pts Parker
NV Rose 96pts Wine Spectator, 94pts Parker, 98pts Tanzer
1990 Brut 98pts Wine Spectator, 97pts Tanzer
1990 Clos de Mesnil 97pts Wine Spectator, 97pts Tanzer

Cost: $30 Includes Champagne Glass
From the email: "There may even be some free trinqets and older vintages poured"

So you get a glass and maybe even a trinqet. I don't think I have any trinqets.

I've been underwhelmed by the quality poured at the VVW tastings. Seems kind of pricey for the opportunity to rub elbows with Palo Alto residents.

I think it's true that the tasting charges are on the high side, although I also think they pour larger tastes. Some people use them more as a wine bar, for me the tastes are far too large. I also think the quality of the wine is pretty high, although their stock may not agree with everyone's preferences (more traditional European, less New World emphasis). They also have three or four different tasting line-ups a week. The tastings listed on the link I provided are pretty representative.

I got quite an education tasting there during the mid 1980's. At the time, I was a Palo Alto resident making about $8-10K/year. I found that it was an interesting side benefit to rub shoulders with the clientele that included the usual wine nuts, HP techies, Hoover Tower academics, the odd bankruptcy lawyer, and poor students like me. Interest in wine provides a great common ground and the diversity made for interesting conversations (more or less like this board).

Nothing about this on Paolo's website. Wonder what will be poured?

Randy - it was in the Mercury News, Wednesday Dec 8, 2004 (Food sec.)
Page 3E.

I called Paolo's and asked for a list; they did not have one to give out. They said the Distributor would be making the list up.

Here's a restaurant that usually has Thursday night tastings.

Lavanda Restaurant in Palo Alto. You can sign up for email notification on the web-site. The biggest problem is they usually do them at the last minute and don't get the info out until the day before.

Tonight Ed Kurtzman (winemaker for August West) will be pouring for one of his other winerys; Freman Pinot Noir.

If you call or e-mail ask for Bruce. He is the proprietor and a great guy. Be sure to tell him David Niederauer sent you! I need my cut .

I just got Vintage Wine Merchants email (Santana Row) and it looks like they've got nothing special this weekend.

You didn't miss much.

A lady from Clicquot inc, lots of people, $20 and we didn't get to keep the glass.

4 bottles:

1996 Veuve Clicquot Grand Dame
95 (I think) Veuve Clicquot Grand Dame Rose
Krug Cuvee
Krug Rose

I learned how to pronounce clos du mesnil for the nth time (I've some sort of mental block, I consistantly mispronounce it. I suppose this belongs in "confess your wine sins" thread . I told the hostess it was due to 5 years of public school french. I must be closing in on middle age or perhaps the kids have numbed me, I just couldn't feel embarrassed at my faux pas. Though I wish I could eradicate the "wrong" way out of my head.).

I didn't take notes, no room in the crowded tiny tasting area that is the SF wine club.

My impressions, Krug Cuvee and Krug Rose fabulous as usual. The Krug Rose I had at thanksgiving had 5+ years of age on it, I think it showed better than the one I had today. The Krug Cuvee was the best Cuvee I've had in awhile.

The 1996 Grand Dame was nice but I'll spend my money on the Dom, Egly-Ouriet, etc and wait for the 1996 Krug.

I would have rather paid $10 extra and had the San Jose line up (and kept the glass. ROFL)

All in all, there were better ways to spend a Saturday afternoon.
