GERMAN WINE TASTING OPPORTUNITY+ SEMINAR

The German Wine Society (Bay Area Chapter) is pleased to pass along this announcement of the Institute of Masters of Wine (North America) concerning their upcoming program in San Francisco.

Germany's Ultimate Terroir Wines
San Francisco - Thursday, March 6, 2003

A unique educational event of the highest caliber presents the very best German wines and growers. The event is divided into two parts:

I. Seminar: Panel of Elite Winemakers - 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Moderated by Joel Butler MW (a member of the GWS Bay Area Chapter), a panel consisting of five of the finest growers from five separate German regions will address and assess the distinctive attributes that account for their most celebrated vineyard sites, employing a tasting of 10 wines to illustrate the issues. Each attendee will receive a detailed background kit on the wines, estates and related subjects. The winemakers, never before assembled together for such an event, are:

Fritz Hasselbach of Weingut Gunderloch (Rheinhessen)
Rowald Hepp of Schloss Vollrads (Rheingau)
Rainer Lingenfelder of Weingut Lingenfelder (Pfalz)
Ernst Loosen of Weingut Dr. Loosen (Mosel)
Egon Müller of Weingut Egon Müller-Scharzhof (Saar)

II. Tasting: Top German Estate Bottlings - 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

This self-guided, walk-around tasting will offer more than 60 top selections, almost all 2001 vintage, from all major German wine regions. Wines have been chosen for the excellence of their origin, both in terms of vineyards and producers. The wines will be limited to superior bottlings emphasizing Erstes Gewächs ("first growth") from the Rheingau, "Selection" and Spätlese or Auslese trocken from other Rhein districts and the Nahe, and Kabinett and Spätlese from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer.

Tuition: $65 for Seminar & Tasting ($50 for Seminar only; $25 for Tasting only)

Sounds really special, GATC. Schloss Vollrads produces some of the very best Eisweins I've ever had. I hope you get to try some. I'm sure we'd all be interested in your report of the seminar and tasting.

You are exactly right, Stealthman_1. It is amazing. The amount of info that I have learned (& keep learning) & the $$$ that I saved (due to people's posts) & Wine that I picked up (that I never could before) the last few months is really, mind-blowing. And, I mean specifically here (on this Site).

This should be pretty good. I was at the German Wine Society's 2001 Vintage Tasting last night where we tasted 70 wines. It was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to this one as well. Egon Muller makes great wines, but few people get to try them because they are the most expensive wines in Germany. I hope he has some of his wines there.
