Since the earlier posts are scrolling off my screen, I'll continue this one ...

Brian, thanks for the update. I'm on the August West mailing list and am looking forward to trying the wine.

I received the confirmation for Pisoni Weekend III for my wife and I today. We have a reservation at the Best Western in Soledad, as there was "no room at the Inn". Anyone else staying at the Best Western, or are there other recommended spots ?

I'm staying at the Best Western. Jan Brosseau recommended it as the best choice for those of us not staying at the Inn. I think there's even supposed to be some sort of shuttle, which will be useful!

I'll be staying at the Best Western also, as will my Sister.

As far as shuttles go... we're not sure if we'll have one or not. Since Soledad is kinda in the middle of now where, as shuttle companies go, it's tough to find one. We'll keep you posted.

Well, if we don't have a shuttle, I'll agree to be a designated driver ... for the morning runs

Who is Ed Kutzman?

I know this crazy guy named Kurtzman. He's the winemaker for Freeman and some other stuff that I can't remember the name of with this guy name Graham. We need to talk him in to bringing some of those two too.

By the way... this is super news!

Can't we get one of those busses that have a couple of porta-potties on a trailer at the rear? It's the weekend!

I will volunteer to be a DD (that is a "designated drunk"). All I know is that I have to crawl about 50 feet to my room every night.

Do we have the "deluxe" restrooms set up at Gary P's or is it just going to be outside the rear entrance to the cave?

Reminds me of that funny funny line from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels:

Sitting at the dinner table
Freddy Benson: Excuse me. May I go to the bathroom first?
Lawrence Jamieson: Of course you may.
After a pause, and with relief, Freddy says: Thank you.

Time to start thinking about wines to bring ...

IIRC, we're supposed to bring a wine from Monterey county for one tasting, and "something to share" for another. Do I have this right ?

I have very little Monterey wine, other than new releases from you know who. I do have some old Chalone pinot and A-Frame cab, which I'm pretty sure are Monterey. Does anyone know of recent tasting notes for old Chalone pinot ? I sent email to the winery, but haven't heard anything back. Maybe a phone call is in order ...

On the second wine - "something to share" is a pretty broad theme. I'm looking for ideas ...

Has anyone else thought about this ? or am I getting an early start becasue I'm looking forward to it a month from now.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

Bringing a wine from the Monterey appalation is not a must. Bring anything you wantjust remembering the I and 40 or 50 other winos who drink your wine will be really pissed if it isn't something fantastic!

Did I say that?

How many people will be in attendance ? I'm trying to decide whether my wife and I should bring magnums or 750s ... What are other folks bringing ?

Scott,

You'recoming from a long way away. Don't break your back bringing lots of wine. Believe me there will be more than enough for everyone.

I'd recommend bringing 750s. What has happened in the pass is that all the bottles are placed out on tables and it is a help-yourself deal. Magnums are certainly not discouraged but 750s are easier to pour especially heading in to the third and fourth hours of the tasting.

All you need to bring is one of those small voice recorders if you want to keep notes, a camera, a bathing suit, and some gloves to hang on to the jeep while Gary P. is driving. I also recommend that if you haven't done so yet you start immediately getting ready for Saturday by drinking at least one bottle today, two tomorrow, and at least two or three bottles every night next week. This event requires a lot of hard training to be ready for what you must do on Saturday.

Gee, one week from today we'll just be getting ready for a trek through Rosella's and Garys' vineyards and then head over to Pisoni to party in the cave.

I'll echo David's comments. Don't go crazy lugging a ton of wine out here. A couple of fun bottles will be plenty! Pinot is always good, as is anything Monterey County... but don't let that stop you from bringing a killer Napa Cab or awesome dessert wine. The theme is "FUN"!!! No rules, just play hard.

If at all possible, you'll want to get to the Inn at the Pinnacles a bit early on Friday... by at least 6PM-ish. Dinner will be at like 7 or 7:30... but there might be a bottle or two of wine to try before dinner. Gary Franscioni is doing a tasting on Friday for wine writer Laurie Daniel. He'll be opening over 30 bottles of current release Garys' and Rosella's vineyard wines... and he's bringing them for some pre-dinner fun!!
