got a call from my dr today telling me that my liver enzymes is high...she asked me if i been drinking
she told me that normal reading is 30/40 whatever that means...my result was 57/81?
i didn't think i drank a lot and i don't drink everyday...maybe 3 days a week?Â
i guess i am off the juice for while to see what happens

have any of you get tested for your liver level?Â

Mine came back high when I had blood work for life insurance.  I'll have to check and see what they were.

I remembered that Davetex had a similar issue when he had blood work for insurance. They actually turned him down pending a retest. He was retested and all of the levels were fine. It freaked him out. They did say that there is large variability in the results based on the test and levels in the body.

Ricky M,

Did you drink wine the night before the test? I get my liver checked once per year since I'm a cancer survivor. One time I had actualy quite a bit to drink the previous night. I didn't stop to think that it might be a bad idea. It was. My doctor called me and asked "did you by any chance have a few drinks the night before?" He told me not to worry, just come in for another blood test only this time, don't drink the night before. The next test came back in line with normal levels.

If they are that high, why not go back in for a re-check? AST (SGOT) and ALT (SGPT) is what you are talking about right?

A caveat here: I don't know what my levels were on the first and second tests. My doctor merely said they were elevated on the first one and normal on the second one. As a rule, if some sort of medical test looks out of whack, the first thing I and my doctor do is test it again. If it's bad twice we work on it. If not, we watch it closely for awhile.

The other thing is, alcohol is *not* the only thing that can elevate these levels. Some are much more serious than a few drinks. I hope you will get tested again after not drinking for a day or two (or more). If they are still high your doctor can help you find out the reason.

Best of luck,

Tim

I drank the few nights before the test and here is what the results were and the explanation:

GGTP Usual Range 0 - 65, my result 76. GGT is a liver enzyme. Unlike other liver enzymes, GGT is manufactured in the liver of heavy alchol consumers. Guess I shouldn't have drank that week. It did make me back down my weekly consumption.  I had another test in December and these were the results:

AST Usual Range 0 - 41, my result 32
ALT Usual Range 0 - 45, my result 33
