Never been to Pere Jeanty but can ditto the Bistro Jeanty recommendation. The tomato soup is a MUST!

I agree with DJ, David, and Jones and skip Pere Jeanty

There seems to be a trend that is anti-Pere

It is not BAD - just not exciting. For example, the French Fries are nicely cooked, but under seasoned.

In a "market" loaded with "exciting" restaurants (including one of his own) Phillipe has made a mistake IMO on making this a very pedestrian restaurant. He's gotta figure this out someday. Maybe not if the place is selling out on his name.

Terra was pretty good last night, just didn't wow me. Wine list prices were horrendous (good example was 2000 Kistler McCrea chardonnay for $165). Service was terrific. Went to Market for some low brow desserts afterward and thought their wine list was a little more eclectic and definitely more reasonable.

Thank you all for the great input. I think we will skip Pere.... Here's our 4-night dining itinerary:

Thursday (SF): Zuni Cafe
Friday: La Toque
Saturday: Bistro Jeanty
Sunday: Martini House

Not a bad list..... I'm drooling a little bit. The only thing that might change here is that some in our party might vote for Pinot Blanc instead of Bistro Jeanty....

Thanks again - invaluable insight on this board!

We had dinner last night at Domaine Chandon in Yountville. The new chef is very good! We did the tasting menu ($90pp). Although this is the many small portions approach, the dishes are lighter and with more seafood than the FL - designed to be paired with their sparkling wines. They comped us a bottle of their etoile, which went very nicely with the first several plates.

Although on the pricey side, this is again a very fine restaurant. They have remodelled the dining room, which is now warmer and brighter than before.

That's good to hear about Chandon, Bob. Thanks.

As quick as things seem to change, what restaurants are currently firing on all cylinders that have a reasonable wine list and are not really expensive ala F.L. ?

I am going to be staying in Calistoga, but even down towards Napa is fine.

In Calistoga I would go to Wappo for reasonably priced food and wine.

Stomp - where Catahula used to be - should open around June 1. This is owned and operated by Robert Simon who also runs Bistro 45 in LA. He has a very fair wine pricing policy and is known for good food.

I'd hit up All Seasons Bistro.

But Tacqueria Puerto Vallarta has some awesome burritos.

If you're in Sonoma I'd go toZazu . I've not been there, but I'm told it is very good

(DJ Hombre is a chef at Zazu)

Last time I was in the valley, I had breakfast at Califonistoga or Calistogafornia. Something like that. Breakfast was great. Real local hangout. I saw Chris Madrigal's dad having breakfast. So good, we went there twice.
