| To be honest with you (and I'm not trying to be a jerk) neither restaurant is on my go to list of ultra high end restaurants in San Francisco. Between the two of them I'd choose Danko primarily because its a tougher reservation to get (my concern for you however is that Danko has a (deserved imo) reputation for not doing as good as a job with tourists and people who don't have a 415 area code phone number).
Personally I'd rather go to the Dining Room (although if Siegel leaves then I'd strike this from my list); Masa's (first choice); Michael Mina (Mina is far from a perfect restaurant though and can be hit or miss); La Folie. If I didn't go to Aqua so often for work then Aqua would be on the list too. I'd even consider rolling the dice and going to Fifth Floor (just reopened yesterday). A half to a full step down would be places like Ame, Spruce, Boulevard, etc.

| Dan, Will do (shouldn't be too terribly long since I'm making some wine at Crushpad).
Based on your feedback, decided to go back to Aqua as I've yet to be disappointed there. Roy

| Waterbar: Gorgeous (although derivative of Kuleto's other restaurants like Boulevard). Very expensive straight forward food of quality. Better than decent wine list. I'll be back. | | | |

| headed to SF tomorrow for the week. not planning on any crazy dining experiences as the little guy will be with us.
actually we will be in Palo Alto till tuesday and then SF near the conv center wed- sat (leaving early am). maybe we will try to hit Lavanda sunday or monday.
I imagine getting reservations anywhere in that part of the city the end of next week will be tough with all of the orthopedic surgeons (and crap loads of sales people) decending on town. FYI that is what it is if you find it difficult.
i wonder how Penn with deal with the time change. not looking forward to getting up at 3 - 4 am all next week, or being nailed down at 5-6pm.

If you are in the main room, that is. Giant aquariums, nice views, big open spaces. Then there is the back room which felt like a cheap family style restaurant to me. I don't get it.

| One of our current favorites in SF is Bong Su located on 3rd near the W Hotel and SFMOMA. They classify the cuisine as contemporary Vietnamese. We've had three or four GREAT meals there in the last few months. Very hip decor. Respectable wine list. They have a sister restaurant in Palo Alto called Tamarine which I've heard is good too. | | Randy Sloan Match Vineyards | |

| If you're interested in a long lunch with a great wine list, I'd try Spruce. A friend was hard pressed to find a nice "i.e. new and sophisticated" choice for a leisurely lunch and this was recommended by a food critic. It was fantastic. It's out in the avenues a bit, but worth the treck.
Hog Island Oyster Co. in the Ferry Building recently hit a 10 for me as well. They have a very limited menu, but MAN they do it right. Perfect sparkling oysters, the hot oyster dishes are all perfect, with the truffle butter version absolutely out of this world, the best "plain green salad" in SF. It takes a lot to make a perfect salad, and I learned how at this place. Pristine whole leaves of mesclun mix, fresh olive oil, just a hint of vinegar, and sprinkled with sea salt just at the end. I never thought a lettuce leaf could be so complex.
You will pay, however. Lunch for two without wine is about $100. Them oysters don't take up a lot of stomach space...

| | The best deal at Hog Island is their Monday & Thursday happy hours. Raw oysters are $1 with beer and wine discounts. | | | |

I've never been to the back room only the front area and bar. Sorry about that

A16 is closed for lunch on Tuesday. If you want the "A16esque experience" then go to SPQR www.spqrsf.com.

I agree Spruce is a top notch choice. Spruce however (please forgive me for this) is in Presidio Heights near the corner of Spruce and Sacramento Streets.

| Couple of updates Coi remains my pick as the best high end restaurant in the City. Its a bit quirky (located next to a strip club) but the food that Chef Patterson is bringing to the table is the best available. (Note I'm giving credit for innovation.) Always order the egg course no matter what you do. Hopefully the New York Times giving props to Coi doesn't overwhelm it. Waterbar keeps providing a great seafood with a view experience. Prices are seriously high - $65 for turbot and one side (it used to be more believe it or not); $90 for a iced shellfish platter - but worth it imo. | | | |

Randy,
My wife and I ate at Bong Su last night on the strength of your recommendation. The chef must like you. The wine list is impressive and the service was terrific but we didn't think the food was that great. Granted, we were lightweights and didn't try that many dishes - we were coming from a gallery opening with food so neither one of us was that hungry - but none of the four dishes we tried was memorable. It's also pretty pricey - one shared app, two main courses, one side and one cup of tea was over $90. We'll probably try it again at some point- were there one or two dishes that knocked you out? | Hey Richard,
I am so sorry. I feel bad for steering you to a bum meal.
For apps we really liked the Imperial Rolls and Salt and Pepper Calamari. For entrees we really liked the Shaking Beef and there was a shrimp entree that I forget the details but was good.
We're going there tomorrow night and I'll post back. | | Randy Sloan Match Vineyards

| Daniel: You're right. Presidio Heights...I can't afford anything in that neighborhood (even the lattes), so it might as well be the avenues to me. Fine place, though. Good wine list.
Last night: Circuit. Are we running out of restaurant names or what? Actually, food is tasty, wine list is short and good (half bottles of Copain viognier, fifths include Owen Roe, Outpost, etc.). Tried a number of different dishes, appetizers all are great, main courses also tasty, but the steak entree a bit deconstructed. Beef marrow bone with toast and microgreens, fried potato cubes (1" wide) with a teaspoon of hollandaise, and a rectangular cut of steak as big as my fist. All tasty, but a big chunk of steak. Desserts that we tried were great. Prices are fair: appetizers 10-12, entrees 22-30. Boy, I remember the first time I saw a steak entree for $30...
