WRT Stomp - as always the timing is being driven by the contractors. They have to do some amount of earthquake retrofit, so their estimates have not proven to be very good. I'd guess Sept/Oct.

Terra musings: Stacey ran into Lissa and Hiro who told her that they planned to be at the Terra restaurant Sunday and Monday evenings. I thought that it had definitely lost its flair without them, so maybe I'll give it another chance.

Well...damn, I hope they kick it back into gear. They too busy with the new place in SF-proper?

We went to a test dinner at the Restaurant at Meadowood last night. I think they plan to open for real on Tuesday. The remodel is very attractive, although it is now a smaller restaurant - maybe 50 seats. The menu is modeled after the Gary Danko style - price fixed for 3, 4 or 5 courses, pick anything you want. The menu is formatted to show food that might go better with white wines, red wines or both. (Of course we all know that it is not that simple, but it probably helps many diners.) Wine pairings are available for all the menus. There is also a pre-selected 9 course tasting menu.

There were 3 of us and we all ordered different things. I have to say that all the courses were well prepared and quite enjoyable. I will report further as the restaurant settles down.

How about the prices Bob? Are the four different tasting dinners at fixed prices or does it vary with what one orders?

I Meadowood (the restaurant that is) open to the public?

Yes, the restaurant is open to the public. Since this was a test dinner, it was free and I forgot to bring home the menu. The prices are by the number of courses, not what you order. I *think* the 3 course was around 40 something going up to $95 for the 9 course. Extra for the wine pairings.

That doesn't sound bad at all. Do members with the secret handshake still get a discount?

I read today that Stomp (Calistoga) is moving to St. Helena where Keller's Market used to be. Until the move, Stomp will be open, with a new wine and tapas bar moving into the bar area (run by Ron Goldin and Mark Young - owners of Checkers, Brannan's and Flatiron Grill)

We were in Napa over the weekend; we had no advance planning for this trip, and had heard about the Stomp move (or second restaurant?) as well during our three days. We were looking for a place to eat Sat nt enroute back from Sonoma, and went into Stomp at 6:30 with my wife and kids, on a whim and with no reservation. There were only two tables occupied. I was pretty nervous about the food, if the staff had changed, etc given the low turnout early on a Sat eve. The food was just as good as I remembered from a visit last summer. When we left around 8:30, the restaurant might have been half filled. Don't get it.

You are talking about the "old" Stomp in downtown Calistoga, correct?

Stomp will stay open in Calistoga until it moves later this year. The whole staff is moving to the new location, so they don't have the turnover you might fear with a restaurant closing.

A couple of local writers have incorrectly reported that Stomp was closed, which didn't help at all. They are still getting high quality ingredients and Chris Aiken continues to do a great job as chef.

Bressler - Your comments about writers indicating the place had closed down probably explains the emptiness. We were really a bit concerned when we sat down, but had a great meal. Heirloom tomatoes were part of an appetizer and they created a huge tomato salad for me when I asked if they'd just give me some heirlooms. My wife's corn-leek bisque soup was incredible, and our 16yo. didn't understand but loved the anchovies in his ceasar. We were all in a beef mood after fishing in AK, so we all had steak for dinner, but they made a half portion of salmon for our 8YO girl who loved it. Great repeat experience, and it looks like they're still doing free corkage on either Tues or Wed.
