Hey folks -here's the theme for Feb's Dinner Party Across the World:

Italian Food & Italian Wine

This should be fun. Hold or attend a dinner party anytime theweekend of 7-9 February with this theme. Come back here afterwards and share your menu, tasting notes, anecdotes, etc.

Happy cooking and happy sipping!

Okay - I think I've found a good menu for my Feb DPAW attempt. Now I need some help on which Italian wine to go with it. Suggestions from one and all accepted.

Starters:
Tomato & Basil Bruschetta, maybe with some fresh mozarella

Main Course:
Veal or Chicken Piccata over Saffron Risotto
Braised Fennel
Boston Lettuce Salad (optional)

Dessert:
Fresh Strawberries in Balsamic Vinegar & Black Pepper

Help!

Using fresh tomatoes in February?

I would match the main course with a Sangiovese with plenty of acidity. A 2000 rosso di montalcino from Ciacci for example.

Yeah! I live close enough to the Valley that I'm able to get wonderful produce year-round.

Besides - the tomato is diced, so I should be able to get away with greenhouse Plums and not suffer the taste too much. I'll have to repeat this menu again in the summer and see how different the flavors are then.

Thanks for the tip on the wine, Jones. I'll start searching for some suitable bottles now.

Yes, a nice Sangiovese would go well. Chianti would be another Sangio option if you can't find a RdM. I don't think I would have a Brunello or Barolo with this menu though. I think it would be a little too overpowering.

Lilac, I have no idea what I'm making yet. I'll probably figure that out when I get to the market on the morning of the 8th (say about 5am or so).
