Nope. But j_b might be able to make some suggestions whether he is familiar with Pod or not.

Hey j_b, that is where Petey's restaurant is, right?

I have eaten at Pod. It is just outside of University of Penn. Pod is typical Steven Starr. All concept, usually good, never great. I would pick a dozen other restaurants I would visit before going to Pod again. Funky spaceage looking room with a good bar scene. The food is serviceable, the waitresses are usually good looking chicks, but I would rather go to Lecroix at Rittenhouse, Pif, Chloe, Striped Bass, Django (best byo in Philly) Pasion, Dmitri's, Cuba Libra (Petey's restaurant), not to mention Le Bec Fin. If you must do a Steven Starr restaurant, go to the original Continental or Budakhan.

I had a fantastic meal at Miramoto (sp?) a few months back. Japanese fusion, creative atmosphere, pretty good (but expensive) wine list. I'd go back again. Bring your wallet!

There was a bit in Saveur magazine last month about Philadelphia being the hidden gem of dining cities. They listed several interesting restaurants, including an Italian one that sounded great. I'll try to relocate the magazine and get the names...
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is... .ps - friends don't let friends eat farmed salmon.

Philadelphia is the hidden gem of big cities, period. I am a huge fan (I went to law school there).

Philadelphia is far from the best big city imo.
The biggest obvious disaster to doctors in the country. More malpractice premium payouts to lawyers and "victims" than the entire state of California in 2003. More than Miami of all things.

But there's some great food there. As long as you only visit.

Dr T... Doctors are leaving PA (not just Philly) in droves. The guv is trying to get some sanity back into the system, but the lawyers are fighting him tooth and nail. If things don't change, PA may be doctor-free soon.

yes, but the way he is going about is way off the mark. he is trying to raise taxes to help pay a portion of doctors malpractice insurance. this will only add to the real problem, out of site lawsuit rewards. i am sorry but things are getting out of hand.

Going to Phila for the weekend with the kids (9 and 11). Any suggestions where to eat? We are going to Buddakahn one nite, but need another place.

rjs, it depends on if the kids are dining with you. If so, then I would suggest Django (if you can get in, BYO though), Chloe (BYO, no reservations, very small) or Next (new BYO on South St. - very good). Budakhan is cool because it is family style dining. The room is loud and it's very trendy. The food was very good the 3 times I have dined there, but it has been 2 yrs since my last visit. If you are leaving the kids with the babysitters at the hotel, then the must stops are (in order) Lacroix at Rittenhouse, Striped Bass, Le Bec Fin. Have a great time and let us know where you went.

And as an addendum to my earlier post, I returned to Pod and had the chef's special menu. It was excellent. Pod is better than I wrote previously.

JB - thanks. I've been to Buddakhan numberous times, and thought it would be a good choice. I agree- Striped Bass is excellent. I've never been to the other two, but loved Brasserie Perrier. Since we are going Asian one night, think we'lll skip Pod. Tried Django and Next, but they are both full. Has anyone hear of Moshulu? Sounds interesting - on a boat - and got a 22 for food in Zagats.

Another BYO suggestion is Pif. Little French bistro with excellent Escargot in Pernod. Tasty. Look them up on Citysearch.

Sorry I missed this.

Ristorante Panorama has a good wine/food mix. Moshulu is neat, maybe not as good as some others, but the boat thing would be cool for the kids. Brasserie Perrier is a little uppity, but if the kids can handle it, it is worth a trip. The Saloon is good, but maybe too crowded and not as kid friendly. Susannah Foo is an upscale chinese type restaurant (don't think normal chinese food). Mezza Luna, Christians', and a few other good Italians.

This is probably too late. Sorry again.

Morimoto is indeed a good time. A bit of a scene but good food and unique interior.

I've heard good things about Fork but haven't been.
