Agree on David Paul's Lahina Grill -- awesome.

Agree on Roy's (Kahana) but it is located in the Napili Shopping center, no where near Wailea -- is there another one I don't know about? (There used to be, perhaps there still is, a less famous Roy's right next to Roy's Kahana in Napili...go to the Kahana, it is much better.) I've been to the Sansei in Kapalua twice, thought the food was good but not crazy about the service. Not a fan of Nick's or Mama's Fish House. Chez Paul is good, not great, imo.

When in Hawaii I love to eat really fresh fish -- alive literally 12 hours before eating -- prepared by a good chef. To that end, I love PacificO and I'O, both have the same chef and are next to one another in Lahina. I think PacificO is, like $1.50 more expensive per person, but they are essentially the same price. Same general price range as the other really good restaurants on the island, but very casual...you can watch the sun set over the Pacific while eating awesome Opaka-paka or Ono, or Monchong, depending on what the freshest fish of the day is. From a creativity standpoint, neither restaurant is as exciting, as Roy's or David Paul's, but you can have seared Ahi or lamb chops anywhere, the majority of the greatest super-fresh-fish I've had has been at these two restaurants.

If you do stay in Wailea, there used to be an awesome Korean noodle house en route to Kehei (on the right hand side of the stree entering Kehei). And the golf course restaurants were good (sat one table over from Mike Meyers when I ate at one of them). But I've not been to that part of the island in almost 7 years. I might re-think where on Maui you'd stay...if you want seclusion but with things to do you might be able to get a good deal on the Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua. While it is still a lot of money, I know you can book it for well under $300/night. The Kapalua Bay Hotel is even less and is a Starwood Luxury Collection Hotel. I've never stayed there but I've walked through it a number of times and I know lots of people who really like it.

We enjoy Wailea. We like to swim and snorkel. The beach at the Prince is wonderful. You can often see green sea turtles by just walking into the water. We even saw a monk seal swimming near the coral arch south of the hotel - this is unusual for Maui. It takes a bit of swimming to find the arch but it is a fun snorkel - just watch out for the current and go early in the morning. The Maui Prince is a 25-year old property that is is shop worn. It needs a make over. That said, we liked it. Downside is the small pool and expensive resturants. Upside is the food is usally very good, and the staff is very nice. If you join the Prince Preferred Club, you can get a few extra benefits - free local calls, free newspaper. Be sure you get a room that has been redone and move if you are not pleased. We have stayed at other places - PM me if you want more information on other places or some of the local resturants.

That reminds me. In general I avoid Luaus. If you really must, the Luau at Pacific'O is AWESOME.

Whiner, the second Roy's restaurant closed down. Just the main one in Kahana. Big game grill is in the shopping center, used to be really excellent, last time there (June) it was horrid.

Great call, Randy. I wouldn't waste a good meal by going to a Luau.

I believe the Luau at Pacific'O is called a feast at Lele....no?

I agree it is easily the best thing going as far as Luaus...note my love of Pacific'O

Booked it today!! We're going to Maui.

Flying in Sunday night after the wedding and flying out Saturday night. After all the input I've received here as well as some input from a few friends, we have decide to stay at the Maui Prince. Best part about it is it's pretty much a free trip after using my miles. All of the other hotels on the island would have cost about $1000 more for 6 nights. Figured we could put that toward some nice dinners and bottles of wine. Looking forward to relaxing in the sun, snorkeling, surfing, hiking, golfing, eating some good food and drinking some great wine with my soon to be wife!

Now I suppose it's time to start looking into where to eat and what exactly to do. I definately see a couple days of just relaxing on the beach and doing nothing in my future. Hard to imagine sitting on a nice warm beach with the weather we're having up here. Burrrr.

Since you're staying at the Maui Prince, I recommend you play the North Course at Makena. It's a challenging course but offering several distinctive holes and panoramic views of Molokai and Molokini.
And you'll be getting discounted green fees as a guest of the Maui Prince.

Chilly,

Keep posting about your experience, as I think I'm going to be following in your footsteps. My fiancee, Carol, is reading this thread with *way* more than just casual interest!

Steve

Cheers, y'all

I was actually just looking at the 2 courses and trying to decide which one to play. Thanks for the input.

Stemor,

We aren't getting married until June 18th, so there probably won't be to many updates until after I get back.

It turns out one of my coworkers heads to Hawaii 3-4 times per year and Maui is his choice for 2-3 of those trips. He said he would try to get me some more specifics on the islands and if he does I'll post it for you.

even tho you're on the southwest side, and mokena north is a great course, wailea gold is not too bad either. but for my money, on my honeymoon my lovely let me take a trip up to kapalua to play the plantation course. if you're bringing your sticks, take the drive, in fact, do it together, the vistas on this course are simply awesome. my wife, the nongolfer, even commented over and over about the views.

great choice btw, we honeymooned there and loved it!

Although I didn't play it, I did stop by Kapalua (Plantation Course) to see the clubhouse and the famous 663-yard 18th hole.

The green fee is $250, but twilight is $100 beginning at 1:30pm.

On the way back to my hotel, I dropped by the Village course too and ended up staying and having dinner at Vino. Great food with a short but excellent wine list. The mark-ups are on the low side too, e.g. the one I remember was Siduri RRV Pinot Noir for $39 on the list.

Chilly, just make sure you go to David Paul's Lahaina Grill. Top 5 food/dining experience for us all time.
