Has anyone eaten at this restaurant? It is located in the Chambers Hotel. I have heard some good reviews and am planning on taking mrs. jb there the day after Xmas as a little gift-getaway for the two of us. If anyone has eaten there, I'd appreciate your input.

Thanks,

jb

I have not eaten there but about a eight of my foodie friends have and while there were not any negative comments nobody raved about it. I wanted to go but my wife (who has eaten there) said she didn't want to go because Town was only worth going to once.

That doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement. Any way you could get me some details from Mrs. Jones?

I made a reservation for 8:30 on the 26th, so I still plan on going unless I hear it sucks. Regardless, I will post my impressions. Without having been there, it seems like the kind of place my wife would enjoy: good food and an attractive room. Gotta love a sexy room when you are out on a date. As long as the food and service are good, it can make for a beautiful evening. Not really that worried about the wine list, but if it is awful, I may try to see if corkage can be arranged.

I'm prejudiced against restaurants in hotels. In my experience, I find they're rarely the best. A restaurant that has to depend on people dining there solely because they want to has to please people a little more. I realize there are exceptions, but all the best restaurants in my dining experience have not been in hotels. The Four Seasons dining room on Nevis is the only possible exception.

You are correct in your assumptions, Board-O. But mrs. jb loves places that are WOW rooms are that are great for people watching. Don't get me wrong. She is a foodie, but she likes to have more than just the meal to satisfy. She like ambiance. Some of her faves are db Bistro Moderne, Pastis, Nobu and Mercer Kitchen. I'm more of a Gotham Bar & Grill, Eleven Madison Park kind of guy.

Actually Board_o many of the best restaurants in San Francisco are associated with hotels. Fifth Floor, Masas, and a couple more I can't think of off the top of my head. It seems to be one of the things out here to have a really fine eatery at the hotel.

I agree that when a restaurant is in a hotel it is a warning sign. However, the best restaurant I have ever been to is in a hotel (Pierre Gagnaire in Paris) so it isn' the end of the world.

I realize there are exceptions, but I normally prefer not to eat in a hotel restaurant. The best restaurant we found in Chicago was the Dining Room at The Ritz-Carlton.

Edit to note the following: Message reads as a "Reply" to post by Jones. It is really a reply to Board-O's post. Simply hit the wrong button.

Please draw the distinction between a Hotel Restaurant (Like The Dining Rooms at Ritz Carltons) and a restaurant geographically located in a hotel. The following restaurants are ALL in hotels:

Jean Georges
Lespinasse
Alain Ducasse
Le Cirque 2000
DB Bistro
Postrio
Fifth Floor
Mary Elaine's

None of these establishements exists to serve merely the foot traffic generated by the hotels themselves.

Beta testing a new signature.

It seems like a restaurant in a hotel used to be a bigger warning sign in the past. I remember in the 80's when I spent a lot of time in British influenced Asian cities like Singapore (okay it is a one city country), Hong Kong, etc. It shocked me that the best restaurants were in hotels, since in the US at that time, there were very few good restaurants in hotels. Now, to me, there are so many more exceptions that this warning is becoming less useful.
