Angelini Osteria and Mozza (the latter Nancy Silverton and Mario Batali) are fantastic (Mozza is actually two places side by side, one a pizzeria with wonderful pies). The best Italian I've had in LA though is Piccolo in Venice, a very small place (maybe 24 seats) that doesn't take reservations -- really phenomenal. La Botte (in the Piccolo family) in Santa Monica is also supposed to be great (just rec'd a Michelin star) -- haven't been there yet b/c they don't allow corkage.
