We're going to be in Venice arriving 5/8 departing 5/10.

I need suggestions on where to stay that is nice and won't break the bank.
Also suggestions on places to eat.

TIA

Dine at Antico Martini Campo San Fantin 39-041 5237027
Harrys Bar has great food,

Stayed at the Danielli. Stayed at Metrople last time and was also good. Would avoid American hotels like the plague. Really watch where you stay. Many places are inaccessible to transport. Like a water taxi. Saw mant folks dragging their bags down the street to get to a hotel.

Na Na. Sorry but would not stay over there especially if you are there for only 2 days or so. The Sheraton is too far away, and harder to get to teh airport via water taxi.

Hotel is on the Lido. To see Venice you will need to take a water bus to and from Venice proper. You are at the whims of the boat schedule. Did a trip to Lido once, and the water taxi was the worst.

Stay in city proper - close and accessible to main areas, sites, food, and good sites.

Hotel Danieli

Only 100 yards from Plaza San Marco

My first two choices would be the Gritti or the Danieli. We've stayed a couple times at the Danieli and love the place. I'll bet I could get a nice broom-closet for under $1000 a night (maybe).

I do want to stay away from the Lido. We've also stayed at the Cipriani and that is a real PITA.

I've got my own table in the corner at Harry's.

last trip rate was 535 Euros. Room was upgraded to suite over looking Grand Canel

David, think I saw you at Harry's on New Year eve. You were under that table, not at it.

Venice is one of those places where money goes to die.

I haven't stayed at this hotel but it is highly rated. TripAdvisor has some interesting reviews. When a hotel has a large number of reviews like this one you can get a sense of what it will be like.

However, in my recollection, and verifying with a map, this hotel truely is near the auto park, Still a very long walk from there to the basicallyone and only MAIN bridge to the Plaza San MArco. You will be over 800 meters from Pte Di Rialto. There is one other very small bridge located way south near Gallerie Accadema. That is over 1500 meters away. Again, without a long hike, any one will be dependent upon water taxi's.

Shades of Lido.

Still would look at the "main land" such as Metropole, Bauer, or Danielli for close in and be very convenient to any action.

I agree. Tricia looked at it and it is too long of a walk to San Marco Square.

We'll probably end up at the Metropole, Bauer, or Danielli. The problem is that they are all north of $600 a night and for a "better" room (which is what Tricia wants ) they are north of a $1000.

Do you suppose that Travelocity has a deal on the Danielli (LOL).

David

The Danielli is a Starwood hotel [Sheraton chain] maybe you could look at that for a deal somehow.

walking around venice from one place to another, even from the rialto bridge to the wooden bridge at the academie or just walking around was a big part of the fun for us ... getting lost and learning the way, etc. i guess it depends on the type of trip as well. we were there for a week and stayed in an apartment. it was perfect. and we had a kitchen .

the vaporettos weren't bad, you can get a multi day pass and just use them as often as you would like (to head to murano or just to get somewhere faster than walking), we didn't go to Lido.

In the past we have always walked (actually how else is one supposed to get somewhere) to restaurants for dinner. Most of the classier (does that mean better) restaurants are within a half-mile or so walk from the Square. It really doesn't matter much getting to the restaurants but the walk home 'round midnight is a little more challenging especially after a glass or two of Recioto.

One of the best meals we had in Venice was at Osteria Da Rioba, 2553 Fondamente Miseracordia, Cannaregio. It's a small restaurant on a side canal in an out of the way area with indoor (about 10 tables) and outdoor dining (also about 10 tables). Very casual. It's part of the slow food movement, so don't be in a hurry. We got there right when they opened and did not have a problem getting a table. I don't remember if they take reservations or not. Fabulous food.

We stayed at a Bed & Breakfast hotel:

http://www.cagottardi.com/

We would stay there again. It was clean, modern, pleasant and the staff were friendly. Our room had no views as the "view" rooms had already been booked (I inquired when booking). But the price was right and it was away from San Marco and the major throngs. My only complaint was that there was no elevator and at least 1 flight of stairs. I remember dragging bags up the stairs and it was a hassle. In fact moving any kind of bags around Venice is a hassle.

Good meals in Venice are few and far between. Best meal I had on my trip there last spring was at Alla Testiere. Make a reservation way in advance, as it's a tough one. Only like 8-10 tables in the place. Somewhat reasonably priced wine list - 2001 Valentini Trebbiano d'Abruzzo for 65 Euro if I recall.

Alla Testiere
Castello 5801, Calle del Mondo Nuovo
+39 041 5227220

Closed Sundays and Mondays.

Luca, who if I recall is the sommelier, speaks excellent English.

A slight notch down, but still quite good was da Ignazio. Wine list is more reasonable than Testiere, and they're known for their granseole (spider crab), grilled seafood, and risotto.

Trattoria da Ignazio
San Polo 2749, Calle dei Saoneri
+39 041 5234852

Closed Saturdays.

Fausto, our waiter, was a riot.

Addresses in Venezia messed me up a little before I got there. Castello, San Polo, etc, refers to the district (there are five in total, if I recall), then there's the number, then the "street" is after the number.

I rented an apartment about 5 minutes away from Piazza San Marco, which was more than adequate for our trip. Nice to be away from the Piazza, and even nicer to not pay 500 Euro a night for a hotel!

Oh, and if you're looking for wine on your trip, the most interesting shop (and somewhat reasonable - again, relative to your surroundings) is Millevini Enoteca. It's just behind the Ponte Rialto. Guy that runs the shop is really nice. Has big label stuff, but also obscure, local, small production stuff.

Antico Martini [Campo Fantin] three blocks from Plaza St Marco] has been there since the 20's. great food, night club, and a super wine list, fully segregated by varietal, and very well priced. Service excellent. Mix of customers about 75% locals and others tourists. Have been there on every trip. Look at the web site, they offer a 20% off coupon for dinner after 10:00 p.m.

Also look atHarry's bar , food is also good, but more expensive, wine list not so extensive, and a bit more pricey

Resturant at theMetropole is worth the walk past the Doge. Forgot the new name [was the Zanibar]. Great food, fair list.

I don't think we are going to be eating in Venice other than our "free" breakfast. I made reservations at Hotel Danieli. We're there three nights but one of the nights is on the ship so we really don't have to eat for just two days.

Maybe I can pirate something off the airplane. How serious about food is Italian customs?
