| OK, so I have found two threads talking about LA food so far (see links below). We'll be there for two nights and thus need two places to dine at and try. What would be on your short list? Doesn't have to be the best of the best places, but it can certainly be that if you think highly of the place. I've read those two threads and have something to go on, but I'd like some up to date points of view if possible.... Thanks!! Link 1 Link 2 | | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com |

| Where in LA will you be?
In the South Bay, there are a few great places. Restaurant Christine, Gina Lee's Bistro, are off the beaten path.
Literally, there are hundreds/thousands of places. Let me know where you are staying and I can try to recommend a few.

| I'd recommend staying on the Westside or the South Bay. The Portofino is a very nice Hotel in Redondo Beach, but a bit pricey. Gina Lee and Christine are both excellent choices. On the Westside you may want to check Providence, Spago is always good and a nice experience if you've never been there. | | | |

| I am not a big fan of Campanile and would opt for Lucques in a heart beat. I also really lilked Ortolan the one time I was there, but I must admit it may be a little "too LA."
So much depends on what side of town you are on. Valentino is a classic in Santa Monica. Bastide is great, but no corkage. Tre Venezie is great if you are around Pasadena.

Haven't been to Ortolan but from the web site it seems a bit pretentious... Personally I like Campanile, though I haven't been there in quite a while. There are dozens of very good restaurants in the LA area; of those mentioned in this thread I'd strongly recommend Lucques. Suzanne Goin (also of AOC, but Lucques is better) is one of the best chefs on the west coast. The restaurant space is elegant but understated -- very, very nice but not stuffy, formal or pretentious. The food is delicious and consistently inventive. We were just there on Sunday (Sunday supper prix fixe menu) and it was fantastic as usual. Corkage is $16/bottle.
Angelini Osteria and Josie and also very highly recommended. Along with Lucques, three of my top 5 LA resaurtants. You wouldn't go wrong at any of the three.

LA is the land of Sushi, there are more sushi restaurants in the top 20 food ratings than any other type of food

| Now that I am headed to the LA area, any suggestions/recommendations for restaurants in the Dana Point and Newport Beach areas? The LA restaurants are not our of the question but they are 60 miles away. | | Here's to the corkscrew - a useful key to unlock the storehouse of wit, the treasury of laughter, the front door of fellowship, and the gate of pleasant folly. Stonehill Tavern at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort. Michael Mina is the executive chef (though I doubt if he is there too often given that he has a restaurant in San Francisco). | | | http://www.sweetandsourspectator.org | |

| Tannins. I haven't been there yet but have heard decent things about it. Its moderatly priced and claim over 500 wines on the list. Its in San Juan Capistrano which is next to Dana Point. If you try it let me know if its worth the drive. | | | LC17SMP | |
