| After several visits to the area, and inquiring about BYO, here are my most recent opinions of some of the places we've visited. I'll start with my favorite. The others follow in haphazard order.
The Falcon house in Delray Beach. Tim Baur, one of the owners, is a gracious host and truly carse about wine. When I called and inquired about BYO, he was encouraging. We've been there three times in the last few months and enjoyed every visit. The food is described as American Tapas and everything we tasted was excellent. The calamari was not the usual overcookedgreasy fried fare with tired tomato sauce. It was crisp and juicy with two fine dipping sauces, one a marinara type sauce and the other a lemon aioli. The quesadilla was as far removed from Taco Bell as Peter Luger's is from Macdonald's. The breast of duck with wild mushroom risotto was beautifully presented with the medium rare seared duck around the unctuous risotto and the Steak Diane was a favorite on two visits. We never tried dessert, but they looked terrific. The restaurant is dominated by a large popular bar that's crowded after 9 PM. The walls are red with nicely designed light boxes. Now as to the wines. There are a number of well-selected wines available by the glass or bottle, and more just by the bottle. Tim recommended a Kim Crawford Pinot Gris that we enjoyed so much we ordered it again when we went with the Rothkos. We were treated fine with our decanter of red wine we brought with us each time. I believe corkage is $10, though we weren't charged anything, presumably because we also bought wine. This is a don't miss place for us.
La Vieilles Maison in Boca Raton. This a beautiful French restaurant in Boca Raton. We had a bad experience with the food here, but Rothko assures me we got the wrong impression. It's quite expensive, but at Rothko's urging, we'll give it another try.
Captain Charlie's Reef Grill in Juno Beach. This is a crowded place with an emphasis on wine. There's a fairly priced wine list (Veuve Cliquot Brut $47.95, '02 Cloudy Bay SB $30) and corkage is $10. Spiegelaus are provided. The seafood is very good to excellent and the place is very informal. In season, arrive about 9:30 PM or you might have to wait 45 minutes for a table.
Snapper's in Boynton Beach. This is a place that's crowded early with early bird crowd. It slows down about 8:30 PM and has an absolutely great wine list with very fair prices ('97 Cinq Cepages $60). John, the owner, loves to talk wine and will decant the better wines for you. The seafood here is also very good to excellent, but corkage is not allowed.
Cafe Chardonnay in Palm Beach Gardens. The food and wine list are as fine as I've found in the state of Florida, but both are overpriced. The hostess/owner is a pain to deal with. The last time we went there we had requested a 9PM reservation. We were shown to an upstairs table in the small section near the kitchen and it felt like it was 85 degrees there. I was wearing a sport jacket and requested a table downstairs. The owner told me it would be 45 minutes to an hour and I told her I hadn't requested a table in a steam room. We left and will not return.
Off the Vine in Palm Beach Gardens. This is owned by the same people as Cafe Chardonnay. It's a bistro type restaurant with a retail wine and gourmet food store in one. The food is moderately priced and very good. The wine list is not particularly well-chosen, but not too highly priced. Ifd you find a bottle you'd rather have in the retail store, they'll charge you retail plus $15 to have it in the restaurant. It's worth the trip.
Nando's Beefeeders in West Palm Beach. This is a steakhouse with good steak and very good prime rib with a salad bar and an absolutely abysmal wine list, but corkage is $10. We took a 1994 Stonestreet Legacy and enjoyed ourselves.
Michael's Sonoma Grill in Boynton Beach. The food was fair to good, nothing remarkable. I doubt this place will in business for long at the prices on the menu. Corkage was $10 and we were only charged corkage for one bottle though we brought two.
Okeechobee Steakhouse in West Palm Beach. Good to very good steak with a decnt salad bar and mediocre wine list. Corkage was $10. When I called to confirm the corkage for a subsequent visit, I was told corkage was not allowed.
Raindancer Steakhouse in West Palm Beach. This is the best steakhouse we found in Palm Beach County. The steak was one notch below the best, but still borderline outstanding. It's expensive as is the wine list. Corkage is $27.
The Riverhouse in Palm Beach Gardens. The food is American and very good. I don't remember much about the wine list, but we went with the Rothkos and brought our wine. There was supposed to be a corkage charge, but we weren't charged. Sport jacket advisable.
Pacific Grill in Boynton Beach. This is a beautiful, airy restaurant with the best fish we've found in Florida. The horseradish crusted snapper and macadamia crusted grouper and truly wonderful and a relative bargain at about $16-18. The wine list is mediocre and I haven't inquired about corkage yet, but I will.
If you like realy great chicken wings served with beer at picnic tables, don't miss The Wing Hut in West Palm Beach. I dare you to ask about corkage. | | |

| PS:
River House and Rain Rancer owned by same people. Neither offers outside seating.
Missing from the list are other greats:
Four Seasons Ritz Carlten
264 The Grill - Palm beach
Taboo
La europe
Lanni in North Palm. Best Veal and lamb around.
Carmines [Sea grill and also the Trattoria] on PGA Blvd offer extensive lists and great food. The grill is indoors, but the other is outside by the Marina. Reservations are requested and honored.
Eddies Wine Bar on the beach in Riveria Beach. Extensive list, corkage, goood food, and reasonable. Also made WS hit list.
Belledonne - Jupiter. Great list food, al fresco
Most of the others, in my opinion, cater to tourists, over priced, and crowded. Reservations are not taken at most of those you listed.
See, we don't reallly let tourists hit the good spots. Keep them ourselves.
Guess you better get out more

| What towns are those restaurants in? Which ones allow corkage? How's the food at each one? | | | |

| Also posted on WS forums, Wife, in-laws and I went to La Vieille Maison for Mother's Day dinner. Always a favorite of ours. Had fricasse of cepe and morels for starter, dover sole meuniere for entree and we shared cheese course for dessert. Fantastic as always. We had a 94, Delas Freres Marquis de la Tourette Hermitage priced at 66 which is one of the better options for price on the list. It | | | |
