A friend of mine is a drag queen performer. He recently performed at a restaurant "Rice Queen" a BYO restaurant with a focus on Asian foods dominated by rice dishes. (Surprise surprise!)

Mark (my drag queen mate)had organised the food for Mrs J and I so I was unaware as to what we were going to get. I took along a bottle of Odyssey Reserve Iliad Hawkes Bay Viognier 2002 (see tns) and a Cote du Rouffach gewurzt by Rene Muree (tn posted previously under other French)

As the first performance started we were served our entrees. I asked the Gewurzt to be served with this.

The entree was a light Thai Green Curry with Chicken, and was very tasty. It had strong heat but wasn't too hot, allowing the floral flavours and oily palate feel to integrate with the spiced chilli heat. I think it worked quite well.

Mark came on next while we finished our entrees. And we were served with little bowls of cocnut icecream to cleanse the palate. We ate this as he finished off a cover by Dianna Ross. He actually had a damn good voice. For a change they were actually singing instead of miming.

The mains came out as his performance finished and he joined us.
The main was Wild Rice stir fry with a mixture of nuts and smoked fish(almost like a Risotto or Paella) through out it. It was a delightful dish especially with the viognier. Again texture dominated the pleasure of the wine, along with the lovely lingering smokiness of the fish, the viogniers nutty characters and slightly spiced wood note intergrated the dish quite well, although I think a slightly sweeter aged riesling might have worked better.

Dessert was a rice pudding (surprise-not)with raisins and sweetened cream. They had a very small dessert wine list but they did have a Passito Liquoroso by Pelegrino, and this sitted perfectly with the wines texture and flavours mingling very well with the sweetened (almost clotted) cream. The Passito almost seemed to fight with the cream but settled after our palates had adjusted.

All in all a great night with a lot of hilarity and fun.
The food and wine worked well together but I felt the Viognier was a little to dry for the main dish.

Sounds fun Jeremy;
I kept expecting you to throw something in about rice wine!

We have a similar place in Beverly Hills called "La Cage Au Folles" forgive my French if it is incorrect. It has been about 10 years since I have been there but it is a very "La -Ti -Da" place; a gaudy pink building, feathers everywhere, a classic piano bar in the receiving area, classy entertainment.
Live performances... no lip-in-sync!

I was really surprised at the ability of many of the performers with regard to their voices.

This place was more orange and purple with large tropical flowers in huge oriental vase's everywhere.It was quite stylish but with enough gaudy-ness to fit the "avante garde" entertainment, to qoute Mark.
