emo,
Basel is a lovely city. I am sure you will eat and drink well, wherever you go.
I try not to leave town without going to the
Restaurant Drei Könige, located in one of the oldest hotels in the world. Unfortunately, the website indicates that it is closed for renovation until 2006.

Swiss wines are quite quaffable. Kind of a cross between Burgundian and northern Italian styles (oaked and earthy, yet rustic). On the white side, Sauv Blanc and Chasselis are the varietals to try. For reds, it's merlot, cab sauv, and pinot noir.
If you find a good place, please post here. I'll need a backup plan if I swing through in 2005.
Have a good trip!
Otis
