| | I know I'm a little late in the game for this question, but what is the practical difference between Barolo and Barbaresco? Is it merely regional or is there a different winemaking technique? | | | |

| | Its a land based designation. Varietal is same for both areas. Techniques used do not necessarily change between the two regions. Traditionally, Barbaresco was considered to be more feminine and early maturing then Barolo. | | | |

| | One legal difference is that Barolo must be aged for three years and Barbaresco only two. I got this from The Wine Bible, by Karen MacNeil, which points out that those minimums are usually exceeded by top producers. She also agrees with Jones that Barolo are more "masculine" than Barbaresco. One other point she stresses is that over twice as much Barolo is produced as Barbaresco (the former coming from eleven villages and the latter from only three), and as a result, the quality of Barolo across the board is somewhat more variable. | | | |

| | All good points re: Barolo and Barbaresco. Basically, they're different towns - Barolo and its communes are west of Alba, Barbaresco and its communes are east of Alba. Much less Barbaresco is made because the land mass of designated vineyards is 1/3 the size. As for variability in quality, I think it's about the same when you use a ratio of mediocre wine to total production. | | | |
