I like

50 years of Tasting Three Centurys of Wines by Michael Broadbent

I just got

4000 Champagnes by Richard Juhlin

The 4000 Champagnes book is a good one if you are interested in Champagne. Lots of information about the producers and tons of tasting notes.

I finished North American Pinot Noir a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty informative for me. I haven't been able to taste all of those wines so the tasting notes were interesting.

The first half gives a nice description of the process, the appellations and the history... (for me anyway)

Skwid, every place I have looked lists the publication date for this book as August. Do you know where I could get a copy now?

Also, any other suggestions for champagne reference material would be greatly appreciated

There a really good book published by Dorian Kindersley called the Wine Report 2005. Its a series of reports by experts in the various regions, Clive Coates, John Radford, John and Erica Platter, Tom Stephenson, Tom Cannavan etc etc, which covers all the regions in the world where wine is grown, plus a section of viticulture, vinification, vine genetics, biodynamics, market analysis etc etc. It is the only book of its kind, and its on its second edition. It looks set to be an annual book, and it is well worth twice the cover price £9.99.

Currently reading Gerald Asher's "On Wine". I really need to know about some of the Old World history and perspective on wine. The oldest chapters have a copyright dating back to 1972. "It remains to be seen what this [Syrah] grape will give in California: early examples of the wine are still too raw to judge."

Things have changed a lot in the wine world since 1972, more so in California than other places. I think syrah started to pick up in California in the early to mid 1980's, with Qupe, Phelps, Bonny Doon, Estrella Rive, Ojai with others following a bit later. Some time around the mid to late 1990's is when it really exploded. It's interesting to read some of the older books to get a perspective on the changes.

Has anyone read "Bacchus and Me" by Jay McInerney? It got some good recommendations on Eparker but I wanted to check here before I bought it ($2.94 used, on amazon).

I'm traveling more than ever lately and I need a good diversion book for flights vs. working on my g-d computer.

I found it very enjoyable. Lots of different stories. I just ordered a copy of it for my sister for her birthday.
