Thanks for the welcome...

I have a local wine shop or two that I patronize regularly. The bottle shop I got the overpriced Mondavi from is close to work, and I won't be buying much in the way of wine from them again.

The tip for the non-Cali wine is appreciated. Sutler's, my local wine shop, holds tastings peridoically, and last time I found some nice South American wines, including Navarro-Correas (sp?) Malbec and Cab. The Aussies are a nice price point as well.

As far as the attitibude goes, I'll probably play nicely for a while... at least until everyone figures out that "Minnesota Nice" is a crock.

I thought "Minnesota Nice" was a derogatory term meaning nice on the surface, nasty behind your back.

Depends on who you talk to... While I think that Minnesotans can be more friendly up front, it's mostly for show, and they don't give a rip about you any more than any other place in the country.

My $.02 as a life-long Minnesnowtan

Welcome, TRAB.
You're in for a treat here at VC. It's a great group full of good information, lots of opinions and ideas.
I see you are from Stillwater. It's my 2nd favorite town - 1st is Marine on St. Croix.

The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has it's limits...

Hi kpak,

Thanks for the welcome. This seems like a great place to learn more about the world of wine.

Funny you mention Marine on St. Croix, as my wife happens to teach at Marine Elementary. It's a nice little town (about 10 miles north of Stillwater for those that don't know) and pretty small.

Stillwater is a metropolis by comparison. A few small wineries, two wine bars, and some decent restaurants, and I have easy access to the rest of the mtero area.

Trab
I'm more than familiar with the area. Both my parents were born and raised there. Dad from Stillwater, Mom from Marine. (My ancestors were among the original settlers in Marine.) My grandma used to cook at Marine elementary a LONG time ago. My parents were married at the Marine church. I absolutely love the St. Croix River valley and still have a lot of family in the area and visit regularly, although not as often than I'd like. I used to spend every summer there when I was younger, but can't do that anymore - at least not for a while! There are, indeed, some great places to eat there and, although I don't think too much of the St. Croix wines, I would do just about anything to get sweet corn Axtells! Best APPLES here. If you go, tell 'em that some Wino from Alaska sent you. I'll bet they will know who!
Cheers!
Kpak

The St. Croix wines are what they are, cheap, fairly simple wines that can be interesting, but won't remind you of any top-flight stuff. I have a couple bottles of St. Croix Winery's Marechal Foch red in the basement, along with some Port they made. The Marechal Foch should be drunk in the next year or two, but the Port I'm hoping to age for a while.

Cheers!
