| Hello All ! I found this forum in a search for information about a bottle of wine I just tried and fell in love with... Bernardus 1998 Vintage Select Cabernet. I have read that it's a declassified Marinus which I am guessing means it was not as good. I think it's an amazing bottle of wine.
Anyway, my wife and I enjoy dry reds in particular with a leaning towards Italian reds, Piedmonts especially. Barolo is my fave, hence the forum name.

As for the Bernardus Cab, I see that it's available for $11.94/bottle from HiTimes Wines, locatedhere.
This wine (when it's labelled as Marinus) is usually in the $40/bottle range and gets scores in the mid-high 80s from Wine Spectator. Since this wine is listed as "declassified Marinus", I have to assume that it's below their usual quality ... and many might argue that, even at ~$12/bottle, it still isn't worth drinking. There are so many other bottles of better wine in the same price range! | |

I gotta tell you, this Bernardus Cab was so good I could not believe it. I paid 14 bucks for it (Ohio state minimum) and am probably going to buy a lot more. It was very big; the texture was silky and the finish was great. I was able to get 2 more bottles locally and if they are as good I am going to hop all over what I can find. For that price I'll accept the declassification. I will have to try the 97 Marinus next, that should be amazing (I hope for the price diff!) | | | |

The vineyard where the Marinusis grown is just above Carmel Valley in the Monterey ava. In 1998 there was a huge forest fire in the Big Sur area which is just south and west of this vineyard. The vineyard is right in the path of the prevailing winds comeing from the fire. The vineyard was blocked from all sunlight for over two weeks right in the middle of the growing season by smoke and ash. That is why it was decalssified.
The Marinus '99 and '00 are only fair vintages. In October the 2001 vintage is being released. I have tasted this wine. IMO it is glorious with a much larger % or Cabernet than any Marinus before. If you want to spend $40 on a wine I would suggest you buy one of these and compare your tasting notes you have on the 1998. | | | |

When you say Ohio State Minimum - is there a minimum price for a bottle of wine there or something? If it's $14 that's a lot of cash for crappy wine. Your declassified one sounds a bargain but imagine $14 for Blue Nun! Fourteen Buck Chuck? Please explain. | | | |

It means the state controls how low than can go on price for all liquor, beer and wine sales. Let's say a salesman was to offer a free case for every 10 the wineshop buys, they couldn't use that to drop the price of all the bottles. They can have no blowout loss leader type sales, the state govt. must get all the taxes they can. | | | |

We've got some a lot of folks with Ohio connections -- if not addresses -- here on the site. I lived in the Columbus suburbs for only four years, but still have many friends and fond memories there, and still consider it a home-away-from-home. | |

I live in the Reynoldsburg area and am building a new home in Pickerington. At some point I am going to be building a wine room as well as a walk in humidor in my basement. I am really getting into the cigar/wine/scotch/bourbon thing in the last 5 years. I wish my wallet would let me get into it more but all good things come in time. | | | |

| Good to have another Central Ohio (translation for others: "Columbus area") wine-o aboard. I worked my way through a degree at OU's campus in Lancaster -- and had customers in Gahanna -- while I lived in Worthington, so I know your area well.
