I have absolutely no desire to be in any part of the winery biz. I am happy with my position in the food chain. I keep the economy going and am a very happy consumer.

I have taken the course on Sensory Evaluation of Wine. It examines pretty much all the separate components of wine including sugar, acid, and tannin. I was poured six different glasses and had to put them in the correct order of less to more.

Another interesting eye-opener was Tasting five different wines and make a tasting note on same. Then we were poured four additional flights of the same wines in random orders. We had to pick which wines were the same. I actually did pretty well on this.

People had flown in from Los Angeler and Phoenix to take this course.

I took Intro to Winemaking for Distance Learners in 2002. While some of it was mildly interesting, the vast majority of the material was stuff the committed geek already knows. The rest was of totally academic interest only. Then to top it off you get "winemaking Davis style" which is heavy on the intervention (heck, look at the sample quiz for the Winemaking for Distance Learners class) & not something I agree with at all.

To be fair there were parts of the class that were fun and informative, but most of it was intensely boring.

I got an A by the way...only watched about half of the videotapes...didn't read the printed materials.

I will say that a majority of the stuff in the Components of Wine Tasting class was stuff I already knew. But it was still very interesting going through the exercises of tasting the different components as a brush up and also at a point that I knew a lot more than I did when I first "learned" this stuff.

Of course this was a one day class in a classroom with 30 other wine-geeks and an entertaining instructure.

We'll see what happens when the grapes are ready to pick. Maybe I'll just sit back and watch
