| Ok all you German experts out there, what are your thought? Does Rieslaner age like Riesling does? Longer? Shorter? Any help would be appreciated, since I finally went and bought some. | I always thought rieslaner aged well like rieslings. Schereube (sp?), on the other hand, does not age that well at all. I bought a case of 89 based on recommendation from someone in the WS forum and it was over the hill. I would have bought only 2, but the shipping would have been more than the cost of the wine.
I plan on drinking my 4 cases of the 2001 Darting Durkheimer Nonnengarten rieslaner auslese over the next 25 years if they last that long. Terry Theise put the drinking range of this wine at 8-27 years (2009-2028).
I wonder how long your one bottle will last. | | | |

As far as the Scheurebe goes, I like that, as well as Riesling, at about 4 years of age. I mentioned an '83 Scheurebe Eiswein on the WS site some time ago, but I never said I had it aged. I drank it all in its youth and loved it. I paid $17 for each half bottle of the Kreuznacher Hollenbrand Scheurebe Eiswein. I think it was the best dessert wine I've ever had, including many d'Yquems. | | | |

| Rieslaner seems to age pretty much like Riesling in my experience. I had an '85 Auslese (don't recall the producer) a few months ago, and it was like drinking a slightly rustic, high acid aged Riesling.
Scheurebe can go about 10-12 years in the high ripeness categories. The '89 Catoirs are indeed starting to crack up if they have not seen perfect storage. | | | |

Not to mention the exact wine just showed up on "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" on Bravo. Ted took the straight guy to do some wine tasting & they had the '01 Darting Rieslaner Auslese.
What this means about ageability is zero, but I thought it was pretty cool for Darting to get some TV time. | | | |

| The SQN Albino is taking up way too much space in my cooler. Guess we will have to drink it.
Re: Queer Eye... I was happy to see them drinking decent Riesling. Usually they drink Ranco Zabaco Dancing Bull or Turning Leaf. | | | |

| Saw an episode not long ago where they had some guy tasting three dessert wines and one was a Madeira (malmsey). Nicely off the beaten path.
BTW, in my cellar, the Austrians are taller than the germans.
