| | We have a small tasting group that is expanding from regional varietal tastings to exploring wines from specific countries. We are unsure how to organize country specific tastings and wondered how you would go about exploring country specific wines? Our first tasting is going to be Italy and where would you start with a group of eager but relatively novice winos? Any favorite themes? | | | |

| You could focus on a specific wine - like Chianti - and try different producers. You could also try different terroirs (either from one producer or from many), like Barbera d'Alba and Barbera d'Asti; or variations with the same base varietal (like Sangiovese), as in Chianti, Super Tuscan, Vino Nobile, etc. But those options might be a little too specific.
So I think the best choice would be to choose some region, say Piedmont, and try different varietals/styles from there: e.g., Barolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Barbaresco...
It would be harder to have a complete experience regarding Italian wines in only one tasting, but if you must, I would try: Piedmont (Barolo, Barbaresco), Veneto (Valpolicella, Amarone), Tuscany (Chianti, Super Tuscan, Brunello), Friuli (Pinot Bianco or Pinot Grigio), Sicily (Nero d'Avolla, Moscato) and Puglia (Primitivo). | | | |
