Read other TN's to see how wines can be described.

I usually start with appearance, then aroma, then flavor, finally close. Sometimes wines change in the glass and the notes start all over again.

Try closing your eyes when drinking.

Finally, make sure you use your whole tongue. Many people sip wine so that the wine doesn't touch the entire tongue surface -- if that happens, you'll miss flavors.

I agree with Davidn on the Wine wheel. It still helps me place aromas.

I also have a document that I've put together from various sources (maybe TORB's website, don't remember) that details aromas and tastes common to each varietal. It also includes detailed notes on just about every flavor in wine with some notes on the chemical reactions.

For instance here is the descriptor for "Blackcurrant"

BLACKCURRANT
Cassis (F) Schwarzea Johannisbeere (G) Ribes nero (I) Grosella negra (S)
Usually an attractive aroma, but can be mercaptan fault, in which case the blackcurrant will metamorphose into a garlic odour.
Ethyl acetate, ethyl formate, Mercaptohexan-1-ol

I'm happy to share this wine geek document if anyone is interested. Email me at winetex"do not spam me"@hotmail.com. Take out the "..."

Agree with TCK. I actually bought a kiwi just to cut it open and smell it.

I hope that it was dead first otherwise this constitutes animal, more specifcally bird, cruelty. I have never tasted the poor, antipodean, flighthless wonder but it might explain some odd flavours in my Sauvignon Blancs.

KillerB...

You must be right about that. Otherwise, I doubt if he would have caught it!

Here is alink to Brian Jefferies' "Wine Tasting Training Notes" from TORB's website.

I found it pretty interesting and useful.
