While I am in the spelling mood here is another name that is often mispelled.

Sautern... is a cheap white wine that is chemically sweetened

Sauternes... is the wonderful sweet wine from the region in Bordeaux of the same name.

One bottles of Sauternes.
Two bottles of Sauternes.

Oh yes, Sauternes is prononuced with the last S silent (Saw-Turn) even if it is plural. At least I think so. Correct me if you can

Not to mention that you have used the plural "bottles" when referring to a single "bottle".

Gee, Tanks.

Is anybody older than I? I was born in '42.

Please no smart-ass remarks. And don't even think about answering this post if you aren't over 55. I think that narrows it down to one or two others.

Not 1842... It was in the last century.

On pronunciation I've always had it as 'So-t-earn' as 'au' is normally pronounce 'oh' in French.

A friend of mine worked in France for two years and got hooked on Sauternes. She pronounces it just like KillerB wrote it. Just don't ask me: je ne parle pas français!
