No, not that Georgia, the former state of the Soviet Union one.

I understand Georgian wines have a long history, and have been exported to the US and other countries for some time now. An importer wants to start marketing them here, and to that end is having a tasting next week, to which I have been invited and asked to write some reviews of the wines.

I know from a brief internet search that many Georgian wines are sweet or semi-sweet, and that they are primarily made from indigenous varietals almost all of which are unfamiliar to me.

Help me out here, folks: what should I expect? What should I be looking for? Are there any mainstream varietals/brands/blends that would be comparable in your experience to the wines of Georgia?

I'd appreciate any information or assistance that you can provide.

Look for a lot of undrinkable wine. I am serious, Seaquam. I tried a lot of them. Not worth the $$$ is 1 thing. To find 1 that is somewhat drinkable is more like it. Good luck. Have fun.

Oy!

At least there's 2 positive aspects to this: (1) I don't have to pay, and (2) I can stand to practice my spitting technique.

Any labels/producers/varietals that you may have thought to be less repulsive than the rest?

Seq: I do not want to make a generalized statement & put down that entire Wine-making region. I tried many with no success whatsoever. And, let me tell you that some of these are not “cheap” per say. Some cost about $15.00-$30.00. And, they are bad. I could find hundreds from other regions that we all know & love that will kill their Wines. If there are a few, I am unaware of those. I mentioned it a few times that I gave up trying. Not worth my time & money.

If you or any one else is successful in finding wine(s) from the Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, etc… (eastern Europe-region) that are descent, please post those names. I would love to try them. Don’t forget, that is where I come from. I would love to drink some nice wines from that area. And, that area can use the $$$ from the sales of these wines (that’s for sure). But, for now, my $$$ is better spent elsewhere.

Jones mentioned this a few months ago & I added to the statement. I think his friend wants to go down to those areas & explore the opportunities. Great. More power to him. If I had that kind of Wine knowledge &/or $$$, I would look into it. But, I have neither the knowledge nor that kind of $$$.

It is not for the lack of land or environment or climate or will or hard work. All of that is ripe & there. It is lack of knowledge, technology, resources, $$$, people (the Helen Turley’s of the world, the Abreau’s of the world), equipment, & stuff like that.

The opportunity is there. I know for a fact those areas are perfect for growing grapes. Grapes grow in those areas like pineapples in Hawaii. All over the place. When I was a kid, all you had to do is just pick some of the bushes (@ any time you that you want). Abundance of grapes there. We did not go to stores to get grapes, we picked it ourselves. But, like any other business, you need the right people.

Heck, do you know how many people went to Russia & those bordering republics in the early 1990s (when the borders opened) & made millions & millions. A LOT…
