Today we planted 35 vines 4x4. They are Cabernet Saugignon.

They tell me it is a CS191 grafted on to 161-49 root stock.

I know what it means but I don't know what it means. Anybody?

Very interesting read. Thanks for the link MP.

I guess you can just spray that crap out of the ground and not expect to die after drinking the wine :-)

If you drink wine, you get smarter....

Interesting. I have a 6 acre view lot near my home and some of my neighbors planted grapes. One guy said that he planted a varietal that I never heard of. There must be some tax advantage to doing this because I can't see the value of growing these grapes.

Saugignon. Pronounced soggy-yon.

(1)Very similar to sauvignon but a bit more mushy.

(2)Same finger just a little high.

Davidn, LOL. I give up, what does 35 vines 4x4 mean?

The vines are planted 4 feet apart down a row and the rows are also 4 feet apart. There are 5 rows or 7 vines each.

4x6 would be either 4 feet apart down the row and the rows would be 6 feet apart.

Is that right? Someone help me. Does the distance between vines of the distance between the rows come first?

Davidn,

Congrats. I've got a gift for you next time we hook up that you'll need for sure.

Vines first then rows is the convention.

CS is not my area of expertise but I believe 191 is a French clone as opposed to one ID'ed here. It's one of the higher quality ones I believe. 161-49 is a rather rare rootstock for most applications. It's usually only used in lime soils on hills. Which of course describes your yard It's shallow rooting, low vigor, and lime resistant. You'll need to water I bet, but it's an excellent choice.

Congrats davidn!

In 3-4 years, I can envision you playing bocce amidst your vines, watching the sunset, and sipping Chateau David with friends and family.

Best of luck!
