Hi gang! I've only recently gotten into wine. I used to not be able to stand it, but now it's mostly all I buy. My problem is that I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to picking a wine. I've heard that it's all about finding a wine you like and sticking with it and it doesn't matter if it's expensive or not. But I was wonder if anyone had some tips or questions I could ask the sales clerk at the wine store to lead me in the right direction. A friend told me to check out this guy...

Any opinions on him? Good advice? Is he worth listening to? Bad advice? Should I be doing something else completely? If so what? Thanks for the help!

I don't have an opinion on Gary Vaynerchuk; I've never watched his show. I think you'd do better posting here: explaining what you like (whether specific wines you've enjoyed or styles, either way), what you don't like, what your price range is, and let some of the people here make suggestions.

I too am a New to Wine.  With only a year under my belt, I've learn quite enough and still feel I know nothing.  Here is a list of what helped me.
  1. Attend as many tastings as you can.  Most Wine shops have weekly tastings and you can sample a flight of wines for little to no charge.  Ask if the wine shop waives the fee if you purchase a bottle from there shop.  
  2. I've loaded my Ipod with hours of wine pod casts.  It's free and very helpful.  You don't need an Ipod too, just go to Apples site, down load I-tunes for free and upload the pod casts.  At Apples store type Wine in the search area.
  3. Form your own or join a tasting group, then you'll get to taste several bottles of the same wine at the same time.  It's great to buy one bottle and taste 6 wine.   I've learned the most from My group.  Don't intimidated by wine pro's,  I have a Sommelier in my group and He is prefers to taste with not wine enthusiasts. 
  4. Attend a Wine appreciation course.  This is another way to taste a wide range of wines.

Great advice jeremy. I definitely learned the most from attending wine dinners with some great people who've been appreciating wine for longer than I have.
If you drink wine, you get smarter....
