I would like to purchase a few bottles of Sauternes futures (375s). I’m not too experienced in this area, and wanted some suggestions for the 2005 vintage. So far my list of possible purchases includes-

La Tour Blanche
Suduiraut
Rieussec
Guiraud

Are their any others you would strongly consider purchasing? Sorry, D’Yquem is too expensive.

Hi Andrew,

I am a fan of Chateau Climens as well as Chateau Coutet.

Climens can tend to run a bit more expensive than the Coutet. I am not sure of the costs for the 2005 vintage, but for example the 2003 Climens runs at about $100 for the 750ml, while the Coutet will run you about $40-45 for a 750ml.

Otherwise, the list you have provided are all winners.

FYI; the 2005 Chateau d'Yquem is supposed to be "better" than the 2001.

Futures for 375s are going for $400-$450.

Gulp!

Man, $450 for a 375 is crazy (for me at this point). How do you/the critics think 2005 vintage will compare to the 2001? This will be the first futures purchase for me!

David, I hope that is not the inside scoop!  I bought 27 cases of the 2001 thinking it would be the vintage of the century.

One does not "have" to buy futures, as Yquems will always be available in just about any vintage given a price.  The other sauternes are wonderful treats at 1/8 to 1/10 the price of Yquem.   And they seem to disappear from the market because people are drinking them since they are so delicious.Â

That said, David might have a good story to tell about his first Yquem...or what makes it stand head and shoulders above the rest.  I think I would agree...

The great thing about Sauternes is that, with the possible exception of Y'quem, the wines don't appreciate much in value. You can find wonderful older Sauternes at auction for less than you will pay for your 2005 futures.
