| Winetex or other Italian Experts - What do you know about this varietal and the wines made from it? Someone recommended it as a good Italian food wine, reasonably priced, but it is new to me. I did google it and found some basic info but wondered if you had personal experience...

| | Not Winetex, but it is a varietal grown on the island of Sicily and can also be known as Calabrese. It is a full bodied, dark colored wine usually full of redfruits with some spice that absorbs oak(and many producers will use a good deal of it) and has sweet tannins. I have tried the Morgante Don Antonio, Cusuamo, Donnafugata, Colosi and Santa Anastasia. All very different expressions and very different price points. | | | |

| Thanks, alohaj.
Do you have a preferred producer(s)?

| What Alohaj said.
I have had some Cusamanos and liked those. It's a good pizza wine IMO. Unfortunately these wines share the same trait as the other less expensive Italian wines - a seemingly high rate of TCA and/or poor handling.
Try 'em you'll probably like them.

| Apparently this varietal has been written about by Suckling, but that goes to show you how much I read WS!
Going to look for a few to try. Will report back. | | The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has it's limits... ps - friends don't let friends eat farmed salmon.

Rubrato and I am sure the other Feudi you are thinking about are Aglianico. Feudi is based out of Campania and thus produces varietals indigenous for the most part from there; Greco, Fiano, Aglianico etc. I personally don't know of a Nero that they produce.

| When we visited Sicily, we had two Nero d'Avalo wines that were very nice. The one we liked best was a 95 Duca Enrico from Duca di Salapruta. It had tons of black cherry fruit and enough acidity that it stood up to red sauces. We have never been able to find this in the US. We also had a 99 Morgante Don Antonio. We have purchased about three cases of this wine here in the US. We have been very pleased with it. We also have purcased a Ajello Furat. This wine has about 25% Nero d'Avolo. Great pizza wine.

| | I have really enjoyed Nero the most as part of Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG. The Cerasuolo from the producer Cos is always really good. It is usually 60% Nero d'Avolo and 40% Frappato. | | | |

| Sorry I'm late to the party...
I also like Morgante's Don Antonio for pairing with (sausage) pizza. Another one that I used to drink a lot was Regaleali's Rosso del Conte (which might also be listed as Tasca d'Almerita) but I haven't had it in too many years to be sure of its current quality and it is certainly at the higher end in therms of pricing for this varietal. There are lots of good ones I've had in the $15-$24 range but I generally don't write down the names as it is always just that I'm in the mood for wine as opposed to beer or soda when I'm eating a pizza so I don't pay too much attention.
One minor quibble, though... I *think* that the name of the grape is "Nero d'Avola" not "Nero d'Avolo"
