How do you explain this quickly to people who ask you to recommend wines that have
"no or low sulfites"?

I'd ask why, and tell them I couldn't honestly recommend any.
All wines contain sulphites to some degree, even those that haven't had it added.
A handful of raisins will contain way more sulphites than a glass of wine.
Avoid white wines in favour of reds as typically they contain less sulphites.

It's the old "headache" story....
I should ask if they get a headache from Raisin Bran.

The old "I only drink white wine because I get a headache drinking red wine" myth.

Yes, sulfites (salts of sulfurous acid) is in all wines. Many people can have an allergic reaction to sulfites in the form of a headache. Most people just think they have an allergic reaction; it is all in the mind.

First, there are typically more sulfites in white wine than in red.
Second, does one get a headache from pickles? How about beer? Have you read the lable on that box of cookies?

Sulphites occur naturally during fermintation and are also added to the wine for preservation. When I think I have had to much to drink (or too many pickles) I take anAntihistamine.
