| Hey, I have just recently gotten into wine (I turned 21 in March so I am extremely new) so excuse me if my question is so beginner-wino it's laughable.
The 2005 Bordeaux futures craze has intrigued me. While I do not intend to purchase any (well maybe some in the $30-$75 range ) I have thought about purchasing a 1986 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild which I have read is an excellent wine and is currently in it's "drinking window". However I can easily find a 1986 CLR for $250/375ml while a 2005 is running about $585, slightly more than the '86.
I don't understand why an older wine from the same vineyard, a wine that is supposed to be superb, is cheaper than a wine that won't reach maturity for 20 years.
Sorry if the question is silly I just haven't found an answer anywhere else online! Thanks alot! | | | |

| | easy answer. some of the retail pricing of older vintages has not caught up to the pricing of 2005 bordeaux futures. if 2005 bordeaux pricing does not take a step backwards, you should see auction prices of older vintages steadily increase over the next six months. the same thing happened in the mid 90's relative to the 1990 vintage. eventually markets make sense. | | | |
