Subject: Suggestions for Horizontal Tasting

I'm going to host a tasting in which there will be four flights of four wines each, all of them 2003 Pinot Noir. Four will be from the Sonoma Coast, four from RRV, four from Santa Lucia Highlands and four from Santa Rita Hills. Would you group the flights accordingly, keeping all the wines from a given appellation together, or do you think it would be more interesting and educational if each flight had one wine from each appellation? Instinct tells me to go with the former, but given the blind nature of the tasting, it might be more educational to have a wine from each region in every flight. That way the tasters could see if a pattern develops such that they consistently prefer one region to the others. What do you think?

I'd do the flights by region blind first.

Either way sounds fine to me. You'll get a better feel for each region if you do it seoparately, but a better comparison of the regions if include one from each in each flight.

My inclination would be to do it by region. I think the tasters would still be able to notice the regional differences across flights. -Al

Jimmy, That sounds like a great tasting, one most oenophiles would find very interesting.

We have been to a similar tasting, but it went beyond to having each flight with wine from the same vineyard, same year, different producers. I was amazed at how different the wines were and learned a lot. I also vote for one region per flight.

I'm doing a tasting for a foodie group this Sunday. One of the flights will be five different 2003 Loring Wines and another flight will be five different 2003 Gary's Vineyard wines. One flight I always do is five different white wine varietles. It's a kick to see how many people don't like the Chardonnay. And another flight of just Chardonnay. When they see the Kistler come in last everybody wonders. Typically the #1 wine when comparing Chardonnay is the Rombauer. Personally I think it is almost crap but it is built for the masses to enjoy. Now I just have to come up with two more flights. I can never decide whether I want to do horizontals of Cabs or Syrahs or do a line up of five different red wine variatles. Keeping in mind these people are expert foodies but only novice wine drinkers... waddaya think you would find the most interesting.
