The odds of her choosing these four wines because of their pretty labels strikes me as being mighty slim. My guess is that it was intentional payback for him being a lying slimebag. And she can get away with it, if confronted by hubby, by simply asking "Oh, really? What were they worth? And what else do you have in there with pretty labels?"

Cheers, y'all

I was wondering the same thing, but the conclusion I came to was that he had a trophy shelf/rack and these were on it. I kept the strory short, but she told me they were on the first shelf in the cellar and they had pretty labels. I wonder what else was on the shelf.

Since neither Latour or Pride have pretty labels I'm agreeing with Stemor. If she had substituted wines like La Turque for those then her story may have been more believable. Regardless, I would have pulled the corks asap the minute she handed them to me.

Yes, not exactly my approach to a successful marriage.

My approach...

"Honey, you see this bin down here in the corner with all the different bottles in it? That is the bin you should grab anything you want, anytime you want a bottle of wine to take for girls night, bunko, whatever. If I'm not around, that's your bin."

I agree that Latour does not have a pretty label, but Prides is shiny and you know women when something is shining "kind of same reaction when something sparkles in front of a monkey" (no disrespect ladies, just an observation). You guys are probably right, but she had me convinced last night.

That's funny! "No expensive bottles"; I love it!

Like SFBayBum Tricia has "designated" racks that she doesn't even have to tell me if she takes one.

I'm glad I finally got around to reading this thread. If for no other reason than to hear from the best Sommelier I've ever delt with, 'D'. Some recommendations he gave me in the past:

2002 Copain Syrah Hawke's Butte RP 96, not on the wine list but "He had something special for us". My first Copain. I think he charged us $45. I signed up for the mailing list the next day.

2000 Sauzet Puligny Montrachet Les Folatieres , and he was right it did go perfectly with the roast chicken.

1993 De Montille Pommard Les Epenots . To go with a earthy dish with mushrooms and spices and he had it on the list for $75.

Paul,

Just FYI...

D is up at Kingfish in San Mateo now.
kingfish.com

He faxed me his new wine list (14 pages). I'm afraid Tricia put it in the recycle before a got to study it. He thinks it is a great list.

funny (kinda) sidenote
As a somm tonight I tried to prevent a divorce from happening.

long story short.
Tonight we had a tennis group of 21 wealthy ladies having a private party and they all brought wine as agreed upon before hand.
The ladies brought me all the bottles to open and have ready for service.
One lady in particular was waiting in line to get to me and she was holding 4 bottles of wine. I say to her "Good evening can I take those from you to open upon your needs" she says "Yes please do and just open them all and whatever we don't get to, please enjoy with your staff". She hands them to me, and what do I see? 90 Latour, 01 Pride Reserve Cab, 97 Harlan, and 95 Araujo. I proceeded to say "Wow, you have brought some nice treasures from your cellar" she then said. "My husband is away on business and I just wanted to pick out some of his wines that had pretty labels" I asked her if she knew exactly the calliber of wines she brought as others were bringing $25-$50 retail bottles. She said "My husband in the past assured me that we don't have any expensive wines in our cellar so I am not worried". I smiled and recommended that I decant all 4 immediately. What more could I say without calling attention to her in front of her girlfriends?

I hope she doesn't get a divorce over this.

BTW I am taking home a 1/2 bottle of 90 Latour, 1/4 bottle of 97 Harlan and a 3/4 bottle of Araujo. They just didn't have enough time to finish all 27 bottles they demanded to be opened plus 7 bottles of Champagne purchased off my list. Damn my job and these customers that don't respect my opinions

I nominate this for post of the year!
