A local store has a couple bottles left of Tokaji... we don't get a great selection in southern Ontario, but there are a handful of Royal Tokaji Company bottles.

Both are 1999, I believe they're both 5 Puttonyos, but one is Blue Label and one is Red Label.

If I remember right, the Blue Label is a 250mL for $22.95, the Red should be 500mL for $29.95.

Has anyone tried these vintages and could recommend one over the other? Apparently the Red Label got a 90 from Bruce Sanderson on WS... I would think based on the price difference that the smaller bottle would be of better quality, but I've learned that's not always the case...

Thanks in advance

I don't have any direct experience with this producer, but those prices are pretty low, I think. So I don't think you can go wrong just trying one or the other or both. One thing you could do (if Dr. Tannin doesn't chime in here shortly) is go do a search on the WS forums. I think tsunami did several mega-posts that covered his thoughts on producers and vintages of this great wine type.

Don't have any personal experience of those bottlings, but the producer is (certainly was) impeccable.

The Royal Tokaij company was set up by Hugh Johnson et pals, and strov to make the perfect Tokaij. They did it in a modern style with minimal oxidation. Unfortunately, the market was not willing to buy large enough volumes of sweet white wine no matter how high the quality was, and I think the company eventually went bankrupt. They were bought by someone else, and continue under the same name. Hugh Johnson is still affiliated with the company, althouh I do not know how exactly.
