I don't think that storing them on the sides is "bad". Just not optimal.

| I store them in alphabetical order by height.
Then you line them up in a circle.

Kewl. I rarely keep much bubbly anyway and when I have it, well, it disappears pretty quickly. | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com

| Maybe they multiply. Mine certainly have shown signs of this lately. | | | |

| I read the entire thread & it is an interesting thread. Still, this thread did not convince me either way. The recommendations are split about the middle. I am no closer to a decision though... Seems like there is no uniform way of storing. With wine it is clear, with bubbly it is not (varied opinions). | | | |

That would be interesting to say the least.
The reality is that most cellars do not have the type of space to store champagne standing, not even in Champagne. There are enough different opinions on this that one should not have to worry either way. Proper temperature is probably much more important.

| | Unfortunately I cannot stand up Champagne bottles in my bulk storage area: too tall. Mine will have to stay on their sides in the racks. | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone. | |

| | Can I throw this question out there: We all know that just about all Champagne bottles are odd shaped. Being that storage in an issue here, can I store these standing up??? Is that OK OR I would be making a BIG mistake (storing standing up)??? | | | |

| L_C_C, I read a few articles a couple of years back that supported the idea that upright storage made no difference for Champagnes. In addition to anecdotal evidence gathered over a few years (I'm not positive but believe the longest that any of the contributors had actually stored one upright was 6 years), there was some discussion that the large head of the cork as well as the higher pressure inside the bottle ensured no air transfer so keeping the cork damp by laying the bottles down wasn't necessary.
While there were some solid-sounding explanations for why upright storage was acceptable, I personally wouldn't do it for more than a few months, and not at all for my best Champagnes. I'm not so much skeptical as cautious.
IIRC, at least one of the articles was on Jancis Robinson's website; you might try a search there if this of greater interest to you.
