Jones -

Thanks.

Skwid -

Do you know if the winery sells the large formats via futures on their website? I'm particularly interested in the 1.5L and 3.0L size.

STW, they sell them to me (I'm a cellarmaster). I'm not sure if they will sell them to the generic public. It looks like John Walker has futures available for the sizes you are interested in.

Isn't 1933 the year Prohibition was ended?

It is seek. Prohibition did so much harm to our nation's wine industry. Who knows where we would be but for that travesty.

right you are, Jones. prior to that, the feds tried to control alcohol. After, it was given to the states to control. So, those of you in felony states, now you know what to blame

Prohibition also destoryed the brewing industry. In San Francisco alone before Prohibition there were over 20 breweries. After Prohibition only one brewery started back up (Anchor). It took until the legalization of allowing beer to be brewed and sold by the same establishment (i.e. legalization of Brewpubs) for things to really start recovering and this wasn't until the mid 80's (1983 I think, Mendicino Brewing was the first). Just like wine there are still restrictions in some states so brewpubs are not legal in all states.

Watched a show on the History channel where during Prohibition they were taking bottles of Wine & just throwing them against the wall. I was flipping out. Almost made me cry. Really.

We know what Prohibition gave birth to, don't we?

The Kennedy's fortune. They and the Bonfmann's ran liquor from Canada and sent I forget what back on the ships. The Bonfmann's are/were the Seagrams folks.

skwid: The answer I was looking for & it seems no one knows or ignored it, is---Organized Crime (the Italian Mafia), Gig Al C. & Co.

Actually Organized Crime existed in the USA prior to prohibition but prohibition gave them a great avenue for really expanding and collecting lots of money. Something got banned which alot of folks partook in and the Mob filled the gap. Evidently all alcohol was immediately illegal when the consituitional ammendment took effect so for some folks there was a great deal of money lost. Check out:

Anyone want to venture a guess on the Ratings (Parker) for the 2001 Chateau Montelena?

LCC:

I believe he also said it was the best young Montelena he had ever tasted. Considering he rated the 97 in bottle at 98, sounds there there is room for an upgrade in the rating.

With my son having been born in 2001, I believe I will be in for some larger format bottles of this.

Actually that's not entirely true.
From issue 142, RP said "the finest CM since 1997.." 2001 is the finest Montelena in 4 years, not ever. RP gave the '97 98 pts.

Of course, 93-96 barrel tasting deserves a look see, and the final rating could be higher.

Dr. T:

I humbly stand before corrected before you. That is what I get for shooting from memory, instead of looking it up. Your post made me double check, and that is indeed what he said.

His rating is also listed as 94-96.

No biggie.
Bottom line: It should still be an excellent wine to obtain, but only if you can get it at or near the futures price.
