| This question may have answered on this website.
My question concerns the different ways RP and WS give estimate to a wine's maturity.
Here's an example: Montelena Estate Caberent 1999: "RP gives anticipated maturity 2006-2030" and WS says "best between 2005-2016"
My first question: IS the wine not as good and will lose its best characteristics after 2016? Then why would you want to hold to the wine after 2016?
Second, or is it simply personal taste and forecast for the wine's expected life?
Thanks! | | | |

| Personal taste plays a big role in this. If you like primary flavors, drink earlier, if you like bottle-evolved flavors, drink later.
For WA and WS, it is just an educated guess. If you have a case of the wine, drink one early in the window and see how you like it. If it was awesome, try some over the next few years. If it was super-tight, wait awhile before you try another.
If you only have one, use their educated guesses to make one of your own. But also use resources like tasting notes posted here.
I think much more wine is drunk too young than is drunk too old. But that is good, because too young wines are usually better than too old wines. They have some youthful vitality, and you can always give them some air time to come together if need be.

Yep.
And, most important, with time & experience your taste & preference will dictate that to you.
Plus, if you have multiple bottles of a single bottling, try those spread out a few years, & you will see the development, the change in the bottle, & if that bottle is ready to be consumer (to your taste that is).

| RP and WS really are just making a SWAG!
Scientific Wild Ass Guess.
They actually have nothing to base their guesses on. Let's see... this one has a lot of acid... let's give it 2007 to 2010. Hum... this one has high alcohol... should last until 2050.
Yeah, right! | | | |

Yeah, right!
SWAG is right. Go with your personal tastes, I say.
