Last night I tasted a California Chardonnay from 1996 (notes to come later). As i review my notes and try to put my thoughts to words I thought about the most pronounced flavor in this wine - Cooked Bacon . I have picked this up before, but never like what was on the nose of this one. Does any one know if this aroma has any specific origin, cause, or meaning - because I honestly do not know.

I've had exactly the same smell with some reds but never with whites. I'm pretty sure it isn't a fault however, although bacterial clouding often evolves into a meaty(often more raw meaty though) smell. Also it would be evident through the clarity of the wine. So to qoute many a scientitst and politician- I don't know (scientist) I refuse to comment (poltician) even though I have.

I have sensed it in reds, but perhaps not so pronounced. BUT, I like the descriptor. I usually just called it 'meaty or meaty juices.

Perhaps I did no due to a pavlovian reflex to the idea of mmmmbacon!

Sorry slightly off topic but...

Theres an add in NZ for Bacon. This lady is cooking bacon smelling it, obviously savouring it, when a car pulls up outside. She panicks and is running around trying to hide the evidence of her "sin". She sprays the room with air freshner, throws the bacon down the garbage disposal, frantically trys to find something to do with the fry pan and ends up throwing the pan out the window, and hits a man walking in (her husband) the house, knocking him out. The camera then moves to the back of the mans car. It has a " Animal friend- be a vegetarian" sticker on it. Then the logo comes up. Quite funny really.
