| I re-read it, and still stand by what I said. For you, the issue is black and white. For me, and others, it is not nearly so clear. If I smell a wine and say, "wow, something is wrong with this", I cannot immediately determine if its brett, TCA, or just crappy wine. All I am saying is that for many of us that are not as blessed/cursed as you, the presence of TCA may not leap out of the glass. | | | |

Markus, heh heh heh. I never did get the whole 'cat's pee' thing some people get from SBs. Then again, I have never tasted cat's pee, but other folks seem to have indulged in the experience. | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com

| Tell me about it, TJ!
I haven't gotten the cat's pee thing either, but then, I don't have a cat. I once "baby sat" a kitten, though, which decided to hide under my bed where it relieved itself.
The smell was asphyxiating, and didn't bring SB to my mind, at least.

It doesn't taste like cat's pee. I SMELLS like cat's pee.
You should be pretty easy to get to smell cat's pee. If not dog pee should be accesable. It smells pretty much the same as cat's pee depending on the size of the dog. A smaller dog would be closest to Sauvignon Blanc. A larger dog's pee is sometimes an aroma in Petite Sirah.

So, you've tasted cat's pee (since you know it doesn't taste like it), but it smells like it, so, um, you have a cat pee smelling fetish?

| We have three cats so I know what cat pee smells like and I can definitely attest to the fact that David does NOT smell like cat pee. | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone. | |

| This question seems related to this topic so I'm just going to add this on to the thread.
I'm not very good at identifying if a wine is corked (and I'm not that sensitive to TCA) so I was wondering what your thoughts were. I just opened a 2002 Saintsbury Garnet Pinot Noir and had the following impression: Nose was very muted - had to really concentrate to detect any fruit. The palate was worse - no flavor and there was this weird sour taste. I've never had this wine before but this doesn't sound like any of the TNs that I read about it. So is this corked or just a wine with a strange flavor profile?
Thanks! | | | |

Although TCA-tainted (corked) wines with lower contamination levels are sometimes described as having hidden or muted fruit, I've never seen them described as "sour". TCA smells like wet cardboard or old swimming pool water -- moldy.
It sounds more just like an off bottle, perhaps cooked in a hot truck. Give it 69 points and move on. That's what we're all doing now. | | Randy Sloan Match Vineyards

| | Thanks for the responses everyone! I guess its not a clear-cut case of taint but at least this happened with a cheap and relatively easy to replace bottle. | | | |
