| OK, not exactly Burgogne, but rather 2001 de Venoge Coteaux Champenois -- a fairly well-known Champagne house has produced this Pinot Noir still table wine. According to the back label, if my poor French has gotten this right, it's 100% Pinot Noir from 40 year-old vines grown in some of the best peripheral areas of Champagne. Not something new, this varietal from this region was a favorite of Louis XIV.
I'm anticipating something fairly acidic and probably austere, but I could be completely wrong. Has anyone perhaps tried this, or a similar wine, in the past?

| | I haven't had this, but it wouldn't be Burgundy as it isn't from the "region" of Burgundy (much like Gallo "hearty burgundy" isn't a real Burgundy). It doesn't totally suprise me that someone would do this in the Champagne region as ther emust be alot of grape juice available up there. The thing is that Champagne is typically considered "underripe" for still wines. | | | |

Hey, I knew that, skwid. I was just trying to come up with a catchy subject line that would get some response from someone who's tried one of these Pinots. Looks like you're the only one who's bitten so far.
I agree that Champagne is often "underripe", austere and firm, but I'm wondering whether Pinot intended to be vinified as a still red wine would be handled differently I'm also uncertain as to how long I should wait before opening this wine.
