You guys are a kick !

I gotta come down on Jones' side re. Burgundy v. Ca. Pinot. California Pinot can be just as good if not better than 99% of any Burgundy; so there.

This is a correct assumption, however while there is alot of crap Burgundy there is alot of crap CA Pinot out there too. Just like any other varietal you have to wade through a sea of swill to find the "good stuff".

I state this for one main reason... Mr. Skwid believes (and apparantly you also j_b) that Burgundy is the ultimate anything anywhere.

Skwid and j_b are correct! Great Burgundy is the ultimate in red wine IMNSHO. As I've said above there isn't alot of Great Burgundy out there. What is out there has a worldwide following and is expensive as it gets.

He is on a crusade to prove that to both Jones and myself. We have these Pinot showdowns regularly and JW! and I bring some pretty good $50 Ca. Pinot. Skwid brings these $500 Burgundies to convince us they are better. The vote is always 2 for CA and 1 for Burg (duh).

We've done this once and the CA (actually Oregon, the non Burgundy pinots were SQN's) were showing the best Jones had ever seen them. Btw, the Burgundy I brought was nowhere near $500 (that time) and if you can find an SQN pinot for $50 let me know I'll buy all they have (that is if you and JW1 haven't scooped them all up first).

Skwid, you'll just have to keep bringing these trophies to compare (and I have this bridge I want to sell you if you think we'll EVER say we like yours better. I know a good thing when I see it ).

Hmm, I seem to recall a 1985 DRC Romanee St. Vivant which blew the doors off the 1990 Margaux (which was quite good btw, the DRC was just out of this world). I recall someone saying something about not being able to roll the socks up and down because the brain had gone into orbit. Mentioned something about feeling sorry for those poor saps who had to drink CA Pinot. Btw, that bottle cost me $450 but if you look on wine-searcher.com the cheapest I've seen lately is about $900. So that was an expencive bottle (as was the Margaux).

Glasses you say... I love my Burgundy Somm. I use it all the time when I am by myself or if skwid brings one of his we will take them to dinner. But with a group I love my $2.00 (amazon.com twofer) Spiegelau. I think the biggest difference is in the nose. One thing wrong with the Somms though (this has only happend once) is once I fell into the thing while taking a drink and almost broke the thing trying to hold on the the top edge while crawling up the side out of the glass.

Heh, heh, heh. You should have stayed in there and invited the wife. Those things can sleep a family of four with room for a second full bath.

Btw WB good job!

skwid,

Yeah, yeah... details. Whose story is best anyway?

As for that DRC... if you don't have photos it didn't happen. That Burgundy that night was... well... I gotta admit it wasn't bad.

Umm thought..does one actually have to be better than the other?

The limited selection of CA and Oregon Pinot I have tried seems pretty awesome (SQN..I love that stuff thanks Otis.), however the very good Burgs I have tried are an altogether differant animal. Both are good, and while they seem contrasting in styles they both have very good points worth merit on their own. Most US pinots I have tried do have a wonderful structure and focus on more oppulent fruit, while Burgs do seem constrained. I am not sure what older US pinot tastes like, and maybe that is another way to "measure" them off against each other.

Either way I hope both nations produce more "good" pinot and less crud pinot (especially dem French- too confusing they are.)...

Oh and a question...I got offered some Paul Hobbs 2000 Agustina Pinot Noirs (6 btles) at $180 NZD a bttle today ( Thats around $110-120 USD at the moment). AS I can't taste it at the moment I did some research and saw it got 93 points in WS, however does anyone know how well this has/will develope/d and or how long to cellar it?

I agree with the others that it definitely makes a difference in the nose of the wine. I think the enhanced aromas do add to the experience and may in some ways change the taste. I also think the larger surface exposed to air allows for wine left in the glass to open up a bit more but only if allowed to breathe in the glass. On the down side they take up a fair amount of room due to the wide bowl and are a pain to wash. I also have used mine for higher end chardonnays and a few white burgundies with success(this was before buying a couple Montrachet glasses)

My only experience with those funky Riedel Somm Burg stems is when I hung with the NJ dudes at the Green Gables for a Pinot dinner and that glass was amazing. Someday I'll justify it to myself to get a pair for Mrs. TJ and I to use. The ability to pick out so many scents with that glass was amazing.
