That is exactly right GATC. That is why I limited my comments to buying Lynch Bages 2000 to drink as opposed to as an investment. Its a very good wine but it didn't appeal to me like a number of others who are much cheaper.

To get back to d'yquem. Look, I am no expert on the Wine. I had it once (the 1988, one of the better vintages). But, I think, the best way to approach d'yquem (if you do Not mind to sink a few hundred dollars every year) is to buy 1 or 2 bottles & get a vertical going (for those really special occasions).

Even on a bad vintage, I am guessing it is a pretty good bottle of Wine. At least, that is what I would do. Having said that, I have been too cheap to do that.

In bad vintages Yquem is not a good wine. One has to only look at Michael Broadbents latest book to see that there are definitely subpar vintages (where he has notes from the Rodenstock tasting of 125 vintages of Yquem plus lots of others). One thing about Yquem, in very poor years they have not made any wine (the last time was 1991). We'll see if this changes now with LVMH being the owner. They have been using cryroextraction since the mid 80's and most of the vintages have been pretty good. I'm wondering if the cryro is helping them.

I have not seen the 2001 available and it doesn't show up in wine-searcher.com. Btw David, how come no 1962 in your collection?

I don't have a complete vertical for obvious ($$$) reasons. I keep my eye out for bottles all the time. When something comes up on a vintage I don't have if it is decently priced I buy it. If the $$ get to high I pass. Simple as that.

If anyone has any or knows of any for sale at "reasonable" prices be sure and let me know.

I bought the only reasonably priced bottle of 62 Yquem I've seen. It was supposed to have been a pretty good year so I'm hoping it will be tasty when I open it. Just waiting for an occassion.

Let's have a DTSB (DRINK THAT SPECIAL BOTTLE) night. Everyone who wants to participate could open a bottle of Yquem and compare notes. Pick a night.

Maybe it could be any Sauternes, or Barsac?

Or how 'bout an Yquem only OL?

I'd host in my cellar.

Of course we'll have to have lots of fois gras - just to absorb the alcohol, of course

I could be up for this. I've got 62 (which I don't know if I'd bring as it my birth year and I only have one bottle), 67, 89, 95, 96, and 97. I have at least three of each of everything except for the 62. What else could we have to mibble on besides Foie Gras? I've also got some other old Sauternes that could be brought.

Of course we can have fois gras. Also some blue cheese and maybe some nuts. Creme brulee? How about figs stuffed with blue cheese? Some pears.. Maybe apple. Or apple pie? I'm serious. Come up with some things that are finger foods.

Admission would be a bottle of Yquem or some other 95+ Sauternes, Barsac or Monbazillac. (That should keep out the riff-raff ) This must be a "high end" tasting only. And this one should be white only. We can do red dessert at another time. I'll also furnish some Cali dessert wines to compare if we want.

Let's do it. If I can get some support of people coming I will post it over in the OL listing. Maybe sometime early March?

Let me know
